Poor man's Tuff wheel?
« on: March 16, 2005 - 01:29:35 PM »
I really like the look of the Tuff wheel but Flea-bay pricing on those units is scary. The guys at Tuffwheel Restoration do awesome work but my $ could be better spent on more critical items for my 72 right now. Has anyone tried the Grant #860 product on their driver? Was wondering how the install looks when complete. Also would be great if the original horn button could be fitted to the Grant wheel

The wheel looks like this:

72' Cuda restomod
70 Mustang Mach 1
07' Toyota Tacoma Prerunner Dbl cab in Speedway Blue!
01' Honda 1100 Shadow Sabre
96' Seadoo Challenger

Hey 4C - looks slick! So I assume you had to buy the Grant adapter kit? Also, how did you manage to retrofit the horn button? Can you post part numbers so I know what to order?

Here is mine.  What we had to do to use the original horn button was to line the old wheel up with the new wheel (front to back) to get your marks to match up your mounting set up for the original horn button.  Drill out where you marked and install.  I had a hard time getting the glue off of the wheel where the GT horn button was.  If you look really close you can still see some glue.

Oh, and I didn't need to use the grant adapter kit either.

You have two options- buy the wheel from Grant and drill it to fit the stock can and horn button or order one all ready to bolt on from Year One(but you will pat a bunch more).

Actually, I ordered mine from Jacks, was told that the holes would be drilled like Year One says they do.  What I got was a wheel with the same holes Grant drills.  The swore to me it wasn't a grant wheel, but it is, Plain and Simple.  I would go with the Grant wheel unless you know for sure Year One will drill the holes and if that is a job you aren't interested in doing.  It only took about 10 minutes to install the way we did it.

I actually did Daves wheel , you need to drill 8 holes & cut a slot  & tap 3 holes  to mount the horn , no adapter is required to fit the wheel

I too am ordering a wheel.
I notice you folks leave the extension sleeve on, is this just a matter of preference?
I have seen aftermarket wheels installe dboth ways, with and without the sleeve?

it sits too close to the dash with the crush sleeve removed & is an easier install onto the crush sleeve

Hey, I use the poor man's Tuff wheel.   The diameter of the steering is smaller than the original steering wheel.   I like driving with the smaller steering wheel.   I can't explain why.   I guess that other cars I've driven have similar steering wheel diameters and I'm use to it.

I like the way the Grant wheel looks and have decided to order one.

YearOne has #812 for $197  :ack:
Summit has GRT-860 for $33  ;D

Am I missing something?  I don't mind drilling a few holes in order to save $165!

Is this the only difference, I don't want to order the wrong wheel.  The 1 everyone has looks good!

Thanks,

Katfish
