I agree with CP, tab is pretty thick.  Making the slot is not that bad.  You'll be happy down the road knowing it's done right.  And you'll forget about the extra 20min it took. 

I was working on something under the dash, don't remember what it was, but I was having a hard time.  My wife said, "Why don't you just forget it, no one will ever know?"  I said the real problem is I'll know!

I was reading this entire post and thought I'd add that a great paint stripper to use is Peeler (sold at Napa).  I used it on the heavier 500*+ paint and it took it off very quickly.  You guys all have me contemplating whether or not I should do the same with the steering wheel.  Guess I'll see how I like the two spoke one first. :cool:

Got the wheel from Summit (still back ordered from Jegs :() and I stripped the paint off, and drilled the
holes for the studs and the little holes for the horn button but then I went a couple of steps further.

I put it on the 12 ton press and bent the spokes in about an inch so it looks flatter like the original and
then I took some sandpaper and sanded off the cheap looking ridge that goes all around the top
of the padding.

I cut the padding around the outer edges of the spokes back alittle so you can see more of the spokes
and then I went around the outside edges of the spokes with a file so it looks more faceted like an
real tuff wheel

Last I wire wheeled the metal and went over the whole thing with scotch brite to bring out the shine
and also dull up the padding because I think it looked too shiny

I like it enough to put it on my driver but I don't think it would fool any judges

Excellent results 360!  Couple of questions:

Did you strip paint first, or just sand it off?
Did you clear coat it?

I'd like to remove the paint on mine, but I'm concerned about surface rust?  Not sure what material the metal is and if it will pit and rust over time.

The metal is that jap steel that comes with some sort of purplish looking coating on it

I think it's still gonna rust though :dontknow: :-\

very nice - you haver taken the poor mans tuff wheel to a new level! I didnt realize but the spokes on the original are just a little narrower than the Grant aren't they?

Because everything else is so expensive, I support and applaud the efforts in finding ways to save a few dollars on our aging E-bodys.

Thanks 360 for the great comparison shots...  After losing out to three real tuffwheels on egouge (my limit was $500!!!) I think the Grant option has got to be the way to go for my driver, and I am eternally grateful that you took the time to lay it all out for us... Kudos! :driving:

Wow, you guys made that wheel look sweet. Im gonna strip it now, not only to get that d**n glue off, but it looks NICE  :beer:. now i know you guys/gals have tried it a couple different ways but..

What'd you use to strip it?
What method..just poured it on? Thinner + Rag? Or what?
After that what'd you do, i saw someone wire wheeled theirs, someone put some polish and cleared it...
