742 yoke size

    I am thoroughly confused on yokes,  :clueless:

    I was giving a 742 case with a sure grip and 3.55 gear set, I currently have 489 case with a 2.76 one legger. The 742 set-up didn't come with a yoke, I know I need a 10 spline yoke and my current u-joint is about 3 inches wide from outside between the caps with 1 inch end cap across and my current yoke is about 3 1/4 inches across from outside edge to edge and about 2 inches from inside griddle/cradle. So I need to get a yoke for the 742 case set-up to marry with my current drive shaft. So what yoke I am looking for.

    This is going into a 1973 Cuda 440 that was a 318 set-up in a prior life. I am almost positive that I have the original drive shaft and rear end from the 318 set-up.

    915 heads (mild head work, stock bottom end 10/9:1 compression)
    A518 2600-2800 Stall
    4.10 rear gear
    TTI headers with 3' exhaust with  X pipe

    Holley Street Dominator intake
    MSD ignition

    there were 2 u-joints that chrysler used,,,7260 and 7290 i believe..7290's were used on higher HP cars and the 7260's on all the rest..its the cup size that matters to u..they also have conversion u-joints that u can run large size 1 end and smaller on the other...measure the drive shaft holes and go from there....

    What do you call kigher horsepower? My challenger was a 318 but now has a hot little 340. Would my car have been built   with the 7260 and would I be wise to switch to the 7290?

    You're going to want the 7290 yoke because you will have to get another drivshaft anyway.  Your drive shaft is about 4" too long because the 904 trans is shorter than the 727/4-speed setup that is used with 340's/440's.

    Thanks Katfish that picture is exactly what I needed,

    So I need to get a 10 spline 7260 yoke,

    1)  Is their any real advantage between 7260 yoke and 7290 yoke, other than bigger is better (almost self explanatory)
    2)  Am I better off going with the 7290 yoke and using the conversion u-joint 7260 to 7290

     I really don’t want to change out my driveshaft. This is going behind mild 440 (450-475hp) with 727 transmission.

    If you already have the driveshaft, I would get the larger yoke for the rear end, and use the conversion u-joint.

    Least cost now, and you can convert later to 7290 DS if needed.

    if u drive them like i do absolutely LOL,,,that hot little 340 "will" find the weakest link in the drive train....1st trip out of the garage today after all the upgrades i thought i broke the bearings in the rear end or u-joints,,7290 :(  looks like the leaf spring was/is touching the rear lower valance and has to be trimed..transmitting road sensations....whew,,a close one..
