First Start After 6 Months
« on: April 20, 2013 - 03:50:17 AM »
Hi all,

Just getting back into getting the car ready for this spring/summer.  I've just returned from yet another deployment and every time I go for the first run there are issues....dead battery, carb gummed, old fuel....etc...

This year I decided to do a couple things to help that first start so I dumped a bottle of octane boost and carb treatment into the tank.  It's only got like 4-6 gallons in there (old fuel), so I'm hoping if I idle it for a little while the carb should clean up quickly.  I also pulled the coil and primed the oil pump; I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I did it any way.  I blasted the air bleeds and fuel feeders on the holley with carb cleaner, hoping this may help with the lack of idle and hiccups.

Is there a good way to prime the fuel system?  I usually dump a little in the carb, but the bowls are empty for a while.....

Other than charging the battery, any other ideas to expedite a spring time cruise?

Thanks,
Kevin

Next time you leave the car sitting for an extended period of time , try using fuel stabilizer? If possible get a battery tender , plug it in and forget it! :2thumbs:

To prime a carb I use an old mustard squeeze bottle and fill the bowls through then vents.  Might have to do it a couple times.

regarding the fuel stabilizer, I have come across something better than Sta-bil.  This stuff is made by Star Brite called Star Tron http://mystarbrite.com/startron/   It supposedly stabilizes your fuel for 2 years and takes care of the ethanol problems todays fuel has.  I have used this personally in my daily driver, 07 F150 and it went from a rough idle to purring like a kitten.  When I put it in my charger, I also noticed a significant power increase.

Brad/Changin,

Thanks for the tips.  From my last deployment, I started the car as it sat; wouldn't idle, coughed and choking, it was definitely sick...I drove it for a while and it cleared up but that took a little while.  This time I primed a few things and the ***** started right up, idled fine, and I drove just like I would have any day of the week.

I think blasting the air bleeds with carb cleaner may have been the trick...not sure though.  I primed the fuel by turning it over till I smelt gas, then let it sit for the night.  Like I mentioned before, it started right up today.

Again, you guys here are a great resource and I appreciate all the awesome info!
