solid or not
« on: April 21, 2013 - 01:04:12 PM »
ok, my 70 cuda has a mildly modified 440 hp. About 500 -600 horse I suspect. This is my second build for this engine. I am not sure if i want solid motor mounts or dampened. My goal is a fairly quiet comfortable car to drive 20 -30 times a summer. I am also realistic enough to know that I get a bit throttle happy occasionally and want to make sure the mounts hold up. What kind of vibration can i expect (is it teeth rattling)and what effect will it have on comfort. Are there other options?
keep honking I'm reloading

Poly loc's are the way to go. Strength with a bit of cushion.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

poly locks can fail.
use regular motor mounts, then use a Schumacher torque strap.
Thats been my setup for last 12 years, no problems. At least
580 ft-lbs torque, per the calculations anyway.

Personally, I've never seen a poly loc fail. And the OP wanted a quiet comfortable ride so why would he want to use a torque strap?

torque strap with power steering can be a real problem, its in the way of everything, nothing will bolt right in..thats why i went poly-locs..

We just had someone a few weeks ago report they had poly-locs fail on them.
If that happens, then a lot of damage could occur in your engine bay.
The torque strap from Schumacher is a long adjustable rod with large polymer bushings, which
don't affect ride quality. It only performs its function when you are at WOT, or close. Otherwise, you are just riding
on the stock motor mounts. It is a slick piece of engineering.

ya, i don't have power steering. Took it off to save about 60 pounds, and give me more
room around the headers.

ive seen one break and one melt my dads 440 challenger snapped it with ease after a year, the passenger side one on my challenger melted and plus with my big cam i got tired of feeling the engine rock through the frame. Plus if you ever look hard enough they change the drive line angle slightly since they raise the motor up a bit at least on my they did the motor sat  higher and messed up the tranny angle resortring in constant vibs i chased for a year pulled them out went to a sock set up  and installed a strap cars never ran better!

30 years ago I used a Moroso solid mount on the drivers side and stock rubber on the passenger and trans. Worked great in the day for a fair ride and held the BB motor down (stock ones would break on the first WOT from a stop), never had any issues. :2thumbs:

Now using MagMounts with a RB motor and no issues yet.  :)

I'm using both the poly locs and the shumacher torque strap. Works good for me. :2thumbs:

i think i will do the same next week with schmachers e-body new style hold down that clears all accs..

was going down the freeway today and under hard acc i started to feel a rumble for lack of a better word in the wheel that went away after pulling off the freeway,,WTF!..once back in the garage i noticed on the passenger side that the tie rod union was barely touching the passenger side header,,under hard acc the motor lifts up on the drivers side and rotates down on the passenger right into the headers/tie rod..

a little dimple with the ball peen hammer next week at that spot with the schmacher strap and should be good to go,,,

so much for thinking the poly-locs were an end all fix,,i would not have spent the xtra $$ for them if i would have known,,the schmacher strap would have been enough...so if anyone is thinking about them theres your answer,,,

I have the poly locs (even pounded out a set last year) and the torque strap - still put a 1/16" spacer between the mount on passenger side to clear the passenger TTI header on the tie rod.   :dunno: :clueless: Always little obstacles when you wanna play hard / launch hard.

thats interesting,,,i have TTI headers also, but now that its almost done,,for now,,thats not feasible,,the dimple i will have to put in that tube is very minor,,,and the torque strap should stop all contact..didn't notice it b-4 but with the new motor combo,,when i open up the 6-pak competition series mech outboards it snarls!!   :2thumbs:

I will probably fabricate a jumper strap from the engine block ear down the the cross bolt for the mount , completely hidden & unbreakable , I have done this on 2 cars & should have done mine also
