old mopar muscle vs. new mopar muscle
« on: March 16, 2005 - 09:54:14 PM »
i have noticed that there are alot of new mopar muscle. 300 ,crossfier srt6 ,magum, viper ,ram srt 10, and in the future a new dodge charger. in the 300 and the magum you can get a srt 8 with a 6.1L hemi engine that makes 425 hp and 415 lb-ft of tourque and do mid 13 s 1/4 mile. and the crossfire srt 6 has 330 hp and can do low 13 s 1/4 mile times. so can the new mopars compare to the classic ?

...but can they do that without 'traction control"??

Yes, finally 30 years later, they have made something that will stand ground with a 71 440+6 Challenger (& the likes).....................30 years later!!!!!!

It took 'em long enough!

It's amazing when you think about it - they can get equivalent performance with almost double the gas mileage and orders of magnitude less pollution.

The problem is that you have to be well-off to afford the new muscle. How many times in MCG do you read stories of someone who bought a Road Runner or Challenger out of high school? A kid can't buy a Magnum. Performance in a new car is not available to the average Joe anymore, unless it's FWD. Yuck.

Warren Buffett is right - we're becoming a sharecropper society. Sad.

It would be interesting to say compare the cost (inflation calculated) of an optioned out 68 Hemi Charger to the equivelient "new" charger that will be on the market. Using the guideline of income that D/C says this model is geared toward I'd say it does not even begin to compare in even that department? Come on 4C, your the business man with access to all the figures to make this comparrison, see what you come up with on this, thank you.

based on 4% which is the Goverment official lie of the cost of inflation average to keep wages down
the cost of a $4000 car in 70 would now be just under $16,000

Not sure what an old muscle car would cost today but the road runners, Dusters, Novas and such were entry level cars and low priced compared to a lot of other cars of the day.you could option out a Hemi car and get the price way up there but I would love to see a new two door car with no options except the v8 drive train,a modern version of the road runner.

Thanks for your help and support 4C,lol. Ok, lets put a price tag of $5,000.00 on that 68 hemi (I realize a fully optioned car would run a bit more) that car today would run $20,000.00 right? To do the same to my hourly wage today I'd have to make in excess of $35.00 and hour, guess what I'm less than half that amount. The new hemi charger will probably be priced in the mid 30K range, actually about the same as the 300C. Do these calulations seem right ? My point was in 68 I could afford the hemi Charger, today the supposed equlivent would be a bit more difficult.............what's the point? D/C says they targeted an income level of around $75,000.00 a year, come on, how many people who punch a time clock make that kind of money?

the only thing that i dont understand, when someone talks about new mopar muscle, its ok, oh, there fast , they will keep up with an 440 -6  or it will beat a hemi, but when a brand X modle pops up, oh there slow, there junk, my stock 440 wiil kill a zo6 vette, U really  got to thank mercedes benz, there is quite a bit of MB technolagy into mopars, so its not mopar anymore, I think the new mopar musle is ugly and overpriced, and the hemi thing is gettin out of hand, I rather stick with old mopar any day, but i gotta say, i love there ram trucks!!!!

the dodge charger srt-8 does the 1/4 mile in mid 13's and a top speed of 165 mph the 1970 dodge challenger 440+6 with 3.23:1 gears you can do mid 13's and a top speed of 170 mph with 28"tires so they are evenly matched in performance.
