What length bolts? Exhaust Pipe Flange (440 cui)
« on: April 23, 2013 - 09:02:02 PM »
Hello!

Can anyone tell me what bolts I need to reconnect the driver's side exhaust pipe flange on a 1970 GTX 440 engine?

I am pretty sure I need two (2) fully threaded 7/16"-20 bolts + nuts but, I am unsure as to what length they should be. (The Service Manual tightening reference indicates only a 7/16-20 nut.)

I appreciate any assist -- I am picking the replacement gaskets up tomorrow!

Big block engine exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold?

Bolts are 7/16-14 1.75", 1.25 of which are threaded (i.e. not full thread) the head is .28" high and the head is 5/8 Trim. Grade 5 phosphate finish.  Part# 6029004
The nuts are 7/16-14 marsden nuts, phosphate finish as well.  Part# 9429434

Quick search found these:

Jamiez, thank YOU! (again, that is. Seems to me you provided very solid info and resolution to another challenge I faced, some time back, also!)

The blown gasket wasn't diagnosed until just before we ran out of light last night but, I got a new set ordered before the local parts place closed (actually, the guy was hero enough to answer the phone a few minutes after 'official' closing time!)   Came home and, hours later, happened to be talking to another buddy who reminded me how rusted those particular bolts can get but, by that time, I was 1/2 an hour from the car (Lord, next move, we GOTTA get a small house and a BIG garage!)

Thanks again -- hope to be "back in the saddle" before the weekend car show!   Hope you have a great one, also!

No problem, I get a lot of help from this board and it's members, I'm happy to pass along what little I know.  If you're interested in the correct fasteners, the MMC guide is a great investment.  It's not cheap but it's huge with lots of pictures and all the necessary measurements for e body fasteners.

Roger that!   And, I do have the Body & Chassis Manual (for both, '73 chassis AND the '70 440 Mag) but, something tells me the MMC guide you refer to (Master Mechanic Guide?) may be a different text?

Also, after replacing the exhaust pipe flange gasket twice, now;  :working: I still have the tapping so, now I am thinking it may be the manifold gasket or (gulp) possibly a cracked manifold (did I gulp, yet?)  :bricks1:

Worse case scenario, how difficult would it be to locate a replacement manifold?

Is there a manifold source on the same level as Brewers for transmission parts?

As always, thanks in advance!

The MMC fastener guide I was referring to is the MMC Detroit guide:

http://www.mmcdetroit.com/Market_Place/E_body/

As for intake manifolds, I picked one up off ebay, relatively cheap but heavy so it cost nearly as much to ship.  There are lots of aftermarket intakes available for the LA engine (318-340-360) most are aluminum which is a big weight savings.  You might need a carb adapter if you're running a stock TQ.

Oh wow, glad I asked (and did not 'ass'ume  ;-) That guide is now on the Father's Day Most Wanted List (although, I seem to get more attention from those who really know me on "Mutha-'s" Day. That will certainly be the case with by best bud who often helps me out with his expertise, lift, tools, etc.  A professional mechanic of approaching 50 years, he grimaces and groans when we're up to our elbows in a rebuild and I start worrying over specific fasteners that are nowhere to be found, at that moment, etc.  Great guy (actually, high amongst the best of men) but, he and Mark Worman wouldn't last two minutes in a conversation ;-)

For any who happen upon this thread later and whom it may help, I am attaching a pic of the exhaust pipe flange gasket I tried twice (and, for all I know has worked both times) but, a Mopar-specialist mechanic turned me onto these folks who carry the "Super Service" version gasket that will be my first choice, going forward: http://www.accurateltd.com/ (Gent who sent me the link also indicated Accurate are the folks who do the exhausts used on Graveyard Carz.) Some good diagrams on the Accurate website, also.

Right now, I am just waiting an opening with the Mopar-specialist who I finally got my car over to for an initial glance at on Saturday. (He was in the middle of another rebuild and lunch at the time but, now knows what car I'm talking about when I am on the other end of the line!)

Hmmm, my block is a "HP" 440 and I am a tad leery about buying such a part "unknown" off e-bay but, more than willing to if one of my buds can attest to or recommend the seller (previous business experience, etc.)

At this point, I am just relieved to have an accurate (if not definitive) diagnosis and I hope i am back to the "rumble" without any "cracking" soon!

Thanks again for your time and assist!
