Fuel Filter Location
« on: April 25, 2013 - 01:08:34 AM »
Where is the stock fuel filter supposed to be located? On my 73 Challenger, the fuel filter is located between the fuel pump and the carb sitting right next to the carb itself.  This makes for an easy R&R of the fuel filter.  I've seen replacement fuel lines (from fuel pump to carb) being sold and they look a lot longer.  Makes me think my line was purposely cut and the filter installed. If this is true, would the factory location be from the hard fuel line coming up the fender to the fuel pump?  Thanks in advance.

My '73 340 had the filter after the pump between the alternator & timing chain cover. Not an easy R&R

Thanks Wade for your response.  I finally got a 73 FSM and it says.... "318 , 340 and 360 Cu. In. Engines, Fuel Filter is on suction side of Fuel Pump."  They even have a picture.  I read some where the fuel filter should not be completely horizontal but it looks like it is in the stock location.  Maybe that's why yours is mounted where it is???  Or mine where it is now???  I'm trying to resemble the factory appearance.

That picture has been discussed before.  That is NOT the factory possition for the fuel filter.  The fuel filter goes AFTER the pump.  There is a short piece of line bent in a "U" shape right after the pump...then the fuel filter...then the line leading to the carb.  Fine Lines should have the correct lines for your car.

You can see the filter right under the alt pulley in this pic.  This is the factory location...

Awesome!  Thanks for the clarification.  I will be installing my fuel filter in the stock location between the fuel pump and carb in between the two hard fuel lines (just like yours).

BTW, your engine bay looks great... it's so clean!  I would be so embarrassed if you saw mine. lol  But hopefully mine will look almost as clean as yours one day.

The fuel tank, lines and a sending unit were replaced by my car's previous owner; however; I never did ask / have asked him if he was the one who located the fuel filter where it sits, now.  One thing for sure, and that is the fact it is an easy R&R!

And, FCC, in the short six months I've owned the car, I have managed to get the engine bay to no longe look like it did in those pics from last October at Carlisle (found the car and previous owner "waiting for us" in the car corral). I think its possible I will likely have as many miles on the car within the next 12-18 months as the previous owner did over the course of 8 years!

I have two fuel filters. One OEM under the alternator (I'll have to check and see if its before or after the pump) and one next to the carb (glass). I've had issues with the fuel level in the glass one at the carb being full on start-up and then dropping to about 1/3 full running. Is that normal and is it ok to have 2 fuel filters?
I'm running a 360 with an Edelbrock 4bbl.

Thanks
