convert (short tailshaft) b body 833 hemi to e body?
« on: March 17, 2005 - 08:53:30 PM »
IF I get a b body (short tailshaft, single shifter mount location) 833 hemi trans (18 spline), can I take the long tailshaft off my spare 833 e body 23 spline trans and put it on the body 833 housing?

what else is required?
are the internals all the same other than the long tailshaft and the long dual shifter mount location housing?

The b body 18 spline hemis are about $1000 less than e body 18 spline hemis and I have an extra e body 833 23 spline trans for the conversion.

has anybody else done this? what is involved?

I plan on doing the tailshaft swap with a regular 23 spline B-body transmission. I called brewers performance in OH and they answered all my questions, so give them a call and they can tell you what you need and where to buy it....they really know there stuff, in fact the old man that answered my call must have memorized all the part numbers because he was telling me them as soon as I asked. For my conversion, the guy said I needed to get a bigger rear bearing, a gasket kit, and the tailshaft..... I'll assume that you will need that stuff at the very least. Heres their number:  937-698-4259 and heres there website(not completed) www.brewersperformance.com Good Luck!

The A-bodies used the short tailshaft, the B and E-bodies both used the long tailshaft tranny. The E-body had the shifter mounted at the back of the tailshaft housing and the B-body had the shifter mounted at the front of the tailshaft housing.

True, but I think hes talking about pre-70 transmissions. Those 833s had the long tailshaft, but didnt have the mounting plate for e-bodys.

If it's an early B-body tranny he won't have to change the tailshaft, just the housing.

Ok, good ideas, thanks I'll get what I need from those suppliers for the swap if I get an a body hemi trans.

I did mean the a body trans with the short tailshaft.
Since I have the long tailshaft and the long housing on my spare 833 ebody trans, sounds like all I will need is the gaskets and a new bearing since I am sure mine is rusted.

Now, to find a good a body hemi trans for reasonable money.

The OD tranny has a different mainshaft so that piece will not swap , Passoin has Hemi cases for a reasonable price but you will still need the gears

The easiest way to tell is by the year - you couldn't get the non-OD trans after 1974 and you couldn't get an OD before 1975. The other easy-to-spot difference the 4.8" diameter front bearing retainer<EDIT: see below>. Wayne Brewer and Jamie Passon are both tremendous sources of information and can tell you exactly which pieces you need to make it work.

the front brg retainer was 5.125 on the od & 4.80 or 4.35 on the regular 4 spd , also the front shift lever will point down not up on the OD

ok, good.
the good 4 speed I have is an OD trans. 5.125 bearing retainer.

the spare 4 speed that I want to use for parts is a non OD trans.
So if I just find an A body hemi, I should be able to make it a E body hemi trans fairly easily using the non OD parts.

the Oh case can be used for non od in some cases s basically you may be able to swapp all the non OD parts into the od housing & make a Hemi 4 spd
