So I've been sent messages by this eBayer over the 1973 340 cuda body I had listed on eBay this past week.  In the listing I had the title not going with the car because I was afraid that someone would do a re-body or VIN swap.

This guy in the Carolinas, and apparently a huge ebay seller with 2,000+ transactions on eBay, is trying to get me to sell him just the title and tags. Seems rather screwy from a restoration shop.

I Turned him down, but I bet he does this sort of thing regularly so be aware!

I agree is sounds screwy...But why try to rebody a 73 340 car?

Steal a nice one and make it your own.

Unfortunately about 20 years ago I saw this happen with some fellow race acquaintences (losers really). Steal a really nice car with 30k+ in resto in in, go to a junkyard and grab one just like it, re-VIN the thing, register the car in your name, and whammo!

Sad but true....

Why would it be okay for you to keep the title for a car you're selling? That doesn't seem too kosher either. I wouldn't buy a car
knowing that someone else holds a title to it either.

I don't need it, don't want it. I just don't want to promote vin swapping. The buyer could watch me burn it for all I care.

Who has the vin tag?

That is precisely why there are vin number stamps in the body.

The tag is on the car. Should I just let it go and not worry about it?

:iagree:  And while I agree with the rebody issue, I think if you're going to sell a vehicle, you owe the new owner
any legal documentation you have to go with the car. In most states you actually have to surrender the title with the car.

Yes in Massachusetts anyway you need to turn in the old title in order to recieve a new one in your name. On the reverse side of the title there should be instructions and a place for signatures in order for you to transfer ownership of vehicle to a new party. Personally I try to avoid project cars that do not have a title, since it can be a real pain in the butt trying to deal with the RMV to get one.

Yes I can agree to what has been said, but you must also keep in mind that the car is very rough and is a $300 parts car. The likely hood of it being restored are slim to none. Look at the picture I posted, it was basically sold for the price of the doors and the rocker panels. Well worth it if someone needed the good parts on it, but not really resto worthy in my opinion. Yes it was a nicely equipped 73 in ja5 with all bells and whistles. But it's still a 73.

I guess in my mind at the time I thought of it as "Hey I'm selling the doors, rockers and rear wheel tubs of a car I have, sending a title along with it could be asking for trouble."

Which begs the question, how little is too little? If the only salvageable part off the car were a horn bracket, and I sold the car with title, tag and horn bracket... And the rest of what was the body in 5 gallon buckets full of rust to go with it... Would that be illegally selling a vin?

It's such a fine line, I'm just not going to worry about it anymore and just let it go.

Then you should`nt have sent the vin tag either as some states do not require a title on older cars.

I just noticed this Yellowfin dirt bag posted this crap...

This A hole removed his vin and wated to sell his cuda body I tried to get him to not destory the car and leave it alone. I wanted to buy the car and the original vin & fenter tag that went with the car he had advertised  HINT RESTORATION SHOP . I am very disappointed someone would say this kinda crap. Bottom  line here Yellowfin removed his vin and installed it on another 73 he owned & sold the body to some sucker on ebay. Not to mention the other buyer of the vin he put on his other cuda and sold.
Come on is this guy for real I never met anyone looking to vin swap  a 73 No Horsepower   cuda  before who would care...... Hope you all see that this is all **** ....
