Cuda elastomeric bumper and color keyed grille colors
« on: April 30, 2013 - 10:59:36 PM »
Was looking through the "Dealer Data Books" as found on the Hamtramck Historical website http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/library.shtml and I have a couple of questions about the Cuda elastomeric bumper and color keyed grille colors.

1. The '70 Dealer Data Book (DDB) states that the elastomeric bumper was available in nine different colors for the front bumper and only in red for the rear bumper.

2. The '71 "DDB" states that the color choices for the elastomeric front bumper was reduced to six different colors but the choices for the rear bumper were expanded to four.

3. The '71 "DDB" also states that the grille was available in nine different colors keyed to the body color of the car.

4. Lastly I didn't see anything in the '70 "DDB" concerning the availability of having a color keyed grille, nor do I ever remember seeing one on a '70. Just because I didn't see it in the "DDB" or remember seeing one doesn't necessarily mean it didn't exist - I don't remember ever seeing a "mod-top" myself either but those crazy things are out there! So, does anyone know if a color keyed grille was available in '70 and if so, what colors they may have been available in?

So here is what I have so far.

'70 front bumper colors: 1)EV2 Tor Red; 2)FC7 In Violet; 3)EB5 Blue; 4)TX9 Black; 5)Rallye Red; 6)EF8 Ivy Green; 7)EW1 White; 8)FY1 Lemon Twist; 9)FJ5 Limelight

'71 front bumper colors: 1)EV2 Tor Red; 2)FC7 In Violet; 3)GB5 Blue Fire; 4)TX9 Black; 5)GY3 Curious Yellow; 6)FJ6 Sassy Grass Green

'71 rear bumper colors: 1)EV2 Tor Red; 2)FC7 In Violet; 3)GY3 Curious Yellow; 4) :dunno:

'71 grille colors: 1)EV2 Tor Red; 2)FC7 In Violet; 3)GB5 Blue Fire; 4)TX9 Black; 5)GY3 Curious Yellow; 6)FJ6 Sassy Grass Green; 7)GW3 White; 8)FE5 Rallye Red; 9)GK6 Autumn Bronze? :clueless:

'70 grille color(s) other than Argent Silver and black for AAR's? :dunno:

Huh? I didn't realize that I could fill so many of the blanks in just by looking at my own notes of what I have seen myself. Looks like I might have it all except for one of the colors for the '71 rear bumper. But then again, who knows if what I have filled in is even accurate or not. :dunno:

Experts??

I'm pretty sure in 1970, you can get FK5 in a rubber bumper.  Seen several FTs w/those.

I never seen a white front rubber  bumper on a 1970.

I'm pretty sure you can't get a black front rubber  bumper in 1971.  Or at least, never seen one.

1970, I think you can get a black grille or agent.  Didn't AARs come in black?

I never seen a white front rubber  bumper on a 1970.

Here's a '70 HemiCuda with a white bumper. I assume it an elastomeric one but it is possible that the owner may have "created" it or painted it to suit their personal taste. Anyone else ever see a white elastomeric bumper on a '70?

Here's a '71 triple black HemiCuda with a black bumper. Once again, I assume it's an elastomeric bumper but then again it could have been created by the owner. Anyone else on the black bumper for the '71?

Ya, both of those are rubber bumpers, but don't know if they're OEM/coded for them on those cars.

 :clueless:

I've  collected may 50 Cuda fender tags and haven't found any coded for those colors.  But just because I haven't seen it doesn't make it so.

I bought my AAR in 1984. It had never been painted and the grille was black. Unless it had been in some sort of accident I will assume that it came with the black grille. We just freshened it up about a year ago and we left the grille black. I had been around quite a few AAR's in the early 70's when I was a teenager and although stuff like that is getting fuzzy now I recall a black grille on them. As far as the elastomeric bumpers, I think black and white was available on the front in 70 but were discontinued in 71.

Black on the AAR's, yeah that sounds right. I'll add that to the details of my first post on this thread. Thanks Charlie

I think AAR grilles were black plastic, not the usual grey.

Nice work R-T-D! I don't recognize these numbers, what are they? Mopar parts catalog reference numbers or something? Can you provide the reference that you pulled those numbers from?

7-16-0 Radiator Grill
7-16-11 Grill
-- B-S '71 Pntd. FJ6 Avacado 3573 611 "sassy grass green"

Lets compare and see what we got.

'71 Grille cross-check:

FJ6 "sassy grass green" - check!
GY3 "curious yellow" - check!
FC7 "in-violet metallic" - check!
GW3 "sno-white" - check!
EV2 "tor-red metallic" - check!
GB5 "true blue metallic" - check!
GK6 "autumn bronze metallic" - check!
FE5 "rallye red" - check!
GF7 "Sherwood green metallic" - che ... I don't have that one. That's a rare color. Ever see a grille that color? Wait a minute, what happen to TX9 black? I have several pics of Cuda's with black painted grilles. If they are black are they custom and not OEM??

Front bumper cross-check:

So what's the deal here? There is always something isn't there? But like Fox Muldar use to say to Dana Scully on the X-Files "It's out there and we're real close to finding the truth here Scully". We'll get to the bottom of this yet. Keep up the good work R-T-D!

Pretty sure in 1971, there were no black grilles or rubber bumpers.

What you see on the net are custom.

THose numbers are from a parts catalog.

Grille colors:

Okay, so black must be custom and not OEM. :clueless: What parts catalog is that R-T-D? Is it available on the web?

R-T-D, was this copied right out of the parts manual?? It must be right but it seems odd equating "avocado" to Sassy Grass Green. Thinking '70's stuff it seems that "avocado" was always the golden-green like the inside of the fruit of an avocado and not the darker green of the outside skin. In a way the golden-green color of avocado almost looks more like Curious Yellow than Sassy Grass Green.

Then there is Sherwood Green being referred to as "med yellow-green". Sherwood green is the darkest green that you could get. Sherwood Green is not exactly "medium" nor "yellow". Funny but to me Sherwood Green looks a lot like the dark green skin of the avocado! Sherwood green is kind of a rare color. Have you, or anyone else for that matter, seen, or have pictures of, a Sherwood Green car with a painted grille? If so, please post as I am curious to see it.
Cheers!
