Calling all 70-74 440 ebody owners..I need your help
« on: May 01, 2013 - 11:03:16 AM »
I have a 71 cuda 440 with a edelbrock performer intake. On top is a avs carb. The new intake brought up the heighth by roughly 1 3/8 above stock.

My dual snorkel breather on original intake had about 1 1/2" clearance with hood closed.

The new intake took up all the clearance.  :swear:

If anyone has done this or has this setup could you please let me know what air cleaner you used and if you had any problems with the fuel line,  or anything else you have may come across.

Thanks   :working:

Kn offers drop base plate air cleaners that will lower the overall height. I'm sure there are other out there but there is one option. Just measure yours and see what you need

Thanks for the replies, pics would be great. I believe that K&N X-Stream Airflow Assemblies 66-3000 would be to high (3.875") Considering my stock dual snorkel is 3" from top of carb to highest part of air-cleaner lid.

everything needs to be changed , higher throttle cable bracket , longer kickdown for the trans , raise the fuel line up , you need a drop base A/C with about a 3" element , the filter top helps too

I use a K & N drop-base air filter on my 440 & love it. It's one of the filters that pulls air in from the top & sides. A great set-up, but not cheap. It's been a while since I bought it, but I think it was somewhere in the $75 dollar range. The filter element is cleanable. For a good picture, my car/engine is pictured about midway down on page #4. See link below.

I think the ram air guys have baseplates that clear linkage, like a 2 inch drop and a 16 inch baseplate.

also, you can have a machine shop mill off some of the height of your
intake manifold.

When I had the orginal steel Cuda hood, I cut out some of the brackets on the
underneath of the hood, to get more clearance. they can be rewelded to give
more support if needed, but I didn't seem to need it.

also, on air cleaner baseplates, you can grind off some of lip that fits against the
top of the carb, to lower the baseplate. may have to move your coil.

can you go with a 2 inch tall K&N? You should still get the air you need,
as long as you have that Xtreme top cover.

But I must admit, I've squeezed in a 4 inch tall K&N, along with the Xtreme cover.
