Shop manual
« on: May 01, 2013 - 11:59:03 PM »
Where do you guys go to buy shop manuals for your car? I see some on eBay and I'm wondering if they are worth what they are asking on there. I'm looking at 72 Challenger manuals.

I bought one for a 70 challenger off of ebay.  I prefer the book, because I always seem to need something else.  And I bought a laptop podium just like this one that I can wheel around to the end or corner of the car I'm working on.  It's a good place to keep the book close by, and I keep my catalogs and other references below.

But Chryco has a good point about printing new pages out.  They do have a tendency to get dirty.

I have the CD disc and as Neil said it's great to just print out what you need. I keep and electric schematic in the glove box just in case?

So you would recommend  the the cd? Does it have everything I would to know to take the car apart or whatever I need to do to fix the car?

I can't comment on the CD version. I have the actual shop manual. It is printed on telephone book thin paper, and holds smudge spots from greasy fingers nicely.   ???

I'll just say the shop manual gives you a good idea in the area you are working on, but it is not going to give you a play by play description of it to a Tee.

It's never let me down yet? You do need to be somewhat mechanically inclined, it's not a step by step sort of a thing?

The parts manual for your year is also great to have.  There are a lot of exploded views where the Factory Service Manual (FSM) tends to be more photographs.

I figured its not a step by step.i just  need to get something that can tell me wiring schematics and how to things are assembled in the car. So I can reference things to how the car works.

I gave up the idea of writing a book , seemed to me that I would just end up copying the service manual LOL
most things are described well there , you still need some basic mechanical knowledge but it realy covers most things

I got a body and chassis manual from Bishko Automotive Literature. About $90. It's about 3" think, all kinds of electrical diagrams.

I bought mine for my '70 Challenger on ebay from Lloyd's (lloydslit) and it is awsum!!!  It took 2 weeks to get to me here in Australia but it is really worth the wait.   Over 800 pages of absolutely everything.  Best $$ I ever spent for the peace of mind.. do it!!
