AAR/TA mufflers
« on: May 02, 2013 - 09:56:38 AM »
I was wondering if anyone would happen to know the physical dimensions of the mufflers originally used on the challenger T/A and AAR cuda exhaust systems.
Because I am building a similar style exhaust system on my challenger, i am curious if these magnaflo mufflers may work as a substitue....

Is there any other choices out there for mufflers with the inlet/outlet on the same end?

don't know, but I've read that style of muffler hurts power output.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

I remember finding a Wizard or similar name muffler with inlet & outlet at the same end but it was available in 3"

No, it was just mentioned in a Mopar article I read once. They were implying all the twists and turns
hurt power output, which makes some sense, compared to a straight through system. Probably
only 5 or 10 hp, if we're talking about an engine that is not high output.

Found this in a chat room, and found another article, that said the original AAR side exhaust mufflers were restrictive, only flowing 175 cfm.

"Besides the mufflers I make, I do like the Stainless Ultra Flows. I'll be running a set of prototype stainless Super Turbos we built while I worked for Dynomax 11 years ago. These are reverse flow to go on my AAR. We flow tested an NOS muffler I have for the AAR-T/A & it tested at 175 sCFM. The ones we built for my AAR flow 375 sCFM. I can't wait to hear them!"

Something about a "pinch down" area on the muffler, that restricts flow.

I think the Walker Super Turbos flow up near and above 400 CFM. TTI recommends them, due to high
flow and lower noise. But on my 3 inch system, I still wear earplugs. The X pipe seem to make
it quieter.

Thanks for this, I also have a 3inch pipe with an x pipe and was thinking it may be too big for a stock(for now) 6.1 hemi

think I just read that 3 inch is ok if you are 475 horse and higher, so you should be ok, especially if
you upgrade in future, which we all do!!

The physical dimensions of an aar /ta muffler is

muffler body is 20 inches long   23 1/4 including the inlet/outlet pipes
the body is 10 1/2 inches wide
the body is 4 1/2 inches thick
and of course the front and rear corner on the same side are crushed in for clearance

Hope this helps you
