Which Transmission?
« on: May 03, 2013 - 06:32:49 PM »
Ok, I'll tell you what I have and go from there. I have a auto 3 speed reverse Pro Trans built 904. It has a deep pan, no valve body, aluminum direct drum with big piston and multispring, Aluminum forward drum, 245 gear set, steel carrier with roller thrust bearings, roller output support and reverse drum.  I am not a tranny person so I don't know all about this stuff. I am running around 730 HP right now but am thinking of upgrading to more.  In your opinions, what will this tranny hold?  Should I go to a built 727?  Any other suggestions? I am looking for a street/strip application.

In my opinion, you are really reaching the limits of the input shaft and output shaft (if they are stock). I take it that you have not run this 904 in your car at all?

Yes, it came with the car and has been run for 5 years.  I have had no issues with it.  I figured I would have to upgrade either shafts or something.  I found out the place where it came from and spoke to them.  They thinks it is good for maybe another 50 HP but any more would require billet shafts.  He doesn't think it would hold much more than that even with the billet shafts.  He thinks I would be upgrading to something else with new internals and such, maybe a 727 or a powerglide.  I am trying to figure costs with everything if I do put more power in it.  IMO, I think my want is more than my wallet can afford.

I would go 727 over glide for sure. You will spend a lot of money changing to a glide. If you have a manual valve body for the 904 already , you can use it on the 727 and save some $$$$

That's what I thought since I do have a 3 speed reverse.  Could I use anything out of the 904 for the 727 to offset costs?  Or would it be better just to start from scratch?  Do you think it would be more than 2K for another tranny?  Thanks for all your input, it is greatly appreciated.

Do you drag race this car?

I used to drag race more but with another car, financially now I can't, so I got this one to race occasionally.  I might go out to the track 5 times a year at most.  This car was raced a lot more by the previous owner. I guess you can say I am trying to put together a Pro Street car.

What brand manual valve body do you ? I always recommend a VB. with "low band apply" to protect the low sprag. JVX or CRT

Sorry, I don't know.  I've never had the tranny out so far. I only know what I have written down from the old owner.

If it has "engine braking" in low gear then it is a low band apply.  Is it reverse pattern? If it has low band apply, then a billet direct drum is not really necessary for the 727 if you build it. Save some $$$$

Yes it is a reverse pattern. Again I apologize but I'm not sure what low band apply is. I really appreciate all the info you are giving me.  Do you build them?  If so I wish you were closer.  How much would a 727 cost to handle say 1,000 HP?  That is way more than I am planning but then I know it shouldn't go past that.
