1971 VS 1973 Brakes
« on: May 04, 2013 - 08:21:52 PM »
Is there a difference between the 1971  and 1973 Spindles or disc brakes? I was looking at a Wilwood kit and saw that it fit 1970-72. Mine is a 73 is this marketing or is there a difference that would keep this kit from working?

REally? How did you like it over the stock brakes. Silly question I guess. I have a stock Disc now. But I wondered how much improvement it would make. I assume you have to also change the master/booster?

The Wilwood kit will save some weight over the factory stuff, so switching to those over stock would be like changing out Rallye wheels for  some lightweight wheels. In actual braking performance, they aren't a huge improvement. The small factory rotors are 10.89 and the Wilwood are 11, so not a huge increase in leverage there. The four piston calipers of the Wilwood kit may provide some increased feel with high speed braking and pedal feedback.

Braking is about leverage, kind of like using a ratchet. This is why larger diameter rotors provide some much force. Think of the difference you have betweena 1/4" drive rachet and 1/2" drive ratchet. That extra 8" of 1/2" drive handle length allows you to really crank in some torque at the pivot point.

Hey TG - why not run Cordoba discs (12") and get the calliper brackets from a junker Cordoba or similar F body 75 and up. Cheap conversion for better brakes.

Yes, some Cordobas do have larger (11.75") rotors, but the 76 and up F bodies (Aspen,Volare) never did. The F bodies did come with factory discs which means the spindles can be used, but they also have the 10.8 rotors and accompanying caliper adapters. Cordobas, St Regis, Fury, and other larger cars of the 73 and up era are the best sources for the larger caliper adapters, or you can buy them new from Dr Diff. The larger rotors are available at most local parts stores as well. However, these larger rotors also have the bigger inner bearings which require the accompanying spindle, which would be 73-76 A body, 73-74 E body, all F body, 73 and up B body, R body, J body, M body.

My bad. Thought Cordoba, Fury etc were F body but I meant these bigger cars have the calliper brackets you are looking for. I paid $20 for mine at a wrecker
