Windshield washer bottle
« on: May 05, 2013 - 07:03:16 AM »
Is there a method out there to effectively clean up the white(ish)  plastic of the washer bottle? Dish soap isn't getting it done.

I used muriatic acid with water to clean a really stained up one on my dads diesel ford but that plastic was only a few years old but it didn't seems to effect it.

It's just the nature of that plastic to turn yellow.  Nothing is going to get it looking new again.  I had some nice used lisence plate nuts that were just a little yellow.  I soaked them in bleach for a few days and nothing happened.  THen I put them in some muriatic acid.  When I took them out, the plastic had dried out and cracked.

I think new bottles are around $50.  Not cheap but not extremely expensive either.  I know it's hard to replace something that functions perfectly.

I had a '70 Duster bottle I sold a few years ago, best I can remember was I used CLR, a rust removal acid.  Came out pretty good.  My Challey's bottle was brittle & cracked, never tried to clean it.

I never had any luck cleaning mine, yellowed plastic is pretty much unrecoverable.
Be careful removing the pump, I over torqued mine and snapped the threads off it, they are plastic and get brittle.

I have CLR on hand so I'll give that a try, but as CP, burdar and Jameiz are suggesting, I'm probably just gonna have to buy a repro. I'll be at Mopars in the park in a few weeks, so if the CLR doesn't work, someone will be willing to take my money for a new one.
Thanks for the replies guys.   :2thumbs:
