Remote ignition kill for security
« on: May 06, 2013 - 04:07:47 PM »
I was thinking yesterday about a way to make it harder for someone to take off with your ride. The thing in new vehicles is a push botton start that requires no key, just have to have the fob in your pocket the enable the car.

So has anyone seen something similar for a classic car?

I found this which is very close to what I am looking for  Car Defender

Only thing I don't like is that it requires you to hold the FOB at a certain place to allow you to start the car, then only gives you 5 sec to start it.

Also so this but it requires you to plug in a cap type deal to start the car.  Ravelco Anti Theft Device

One of those anti-theft systems may be some what effective, but older cars don't require multiple complex circuits to be energized in order to start and run. On a car like yours all someone needs is a jumper wire from the battery to the coil to energize the ignition, a screwdriver across the starter solenoid to jump the starter and varooom! the engine will come to life!

I have always liked a fuel cut-off valve. Someone might be able to hotwire your car, but they will only be able to get as far as the fuel in the carb float chambers will take them.

A friend had an immobilizer system in his Tahoe , it became problematic & would not let the car start , I pulled off the lower dash cover & reconnected the wires interupted & in well under 5 mins I had the system beat . My friend told his buddy who installed the system how fsat I beat it & he did not believe it .

Just place a switch somewhere convenient like under dash or seat then split the wire to the coil (inside the taped loom and retape the two wires in) and run through the firewall under the carpet to where you like with a hidden toggle switch. Or you could do the same with the control wire to switch the starter. I just prefer that they never start the car at all. Thieves only have a few minutes to figure things out so this will help in most cases.

I have generally run a hidden ground off the tach feed wire , , you can hot wire the who;e system but it still will nto start unless you either find the ground switch or disconnect the tach wire from the coil

I have thought of the switch deal. But then that is dependent on me activating it to work, I never forget anything. But I also hate the idea of an automatic system that is not reliable.

Does that still work with the factory tach?

What happens if they jump power to the coil? would have to think something is going to burn up with a dead short, wire, tach or something.

Wow just typed out a long response & it vanished .
Yes it will work with any tach  , you ground the tach feed wire from the coil not the power wire to the coil  , this way the ign will not generate a spark no matter what is hot wired & it will nto short .

I have been trying for some time to find a good cut off switch.
I would like to install a manual cut off switch tied to a vent pull, but cant find a cutoff with a top lever to attach the cable to. All manual cut off switches have a ball valve, and I would like to have one which I could use tied to a cable.

Are you talking a battery disconnect? Somthing like this:

No, a solenoid type fuel cut off , only manually  operated by a cable.

I was going to work on this but then got to thinking, scarry. I switch from the points to electronic ignion, so will it still work the same? Isn't the tach driven from the ECM now?
