Power Steering
« on: May 07, 2013 - 07:09:12 PM »
Wasn't sure where to ask this but I think this is close . If I accelerate real hard there is a racket under my hood . If I tighten the heck out of the power steering belt noise goes away but belt is toooo tight . It's not a squeeaing noise like a loose belt sounds like a rattle . Input shaft bearing feels tight by hand with belt off . The pump is old but hate to buy a new one just to test .Anyone ever come across anything like this before ? Thanks :clueless:

Check to see if your fan is hitting the shroud on the rad. With the torque of the engine and the twisting motion, if there isn`t enough clearance around the shroud it makes a heck of a noise. Mine did, and had to put in more solid motor mounts and move the shroud and rad alittle.  :burnout:

Take the belt off and drive the car.  If the noise is still there, the pump is not your problem.  I agree with the above statement. A bad motor mount could be letting the fan hit the shroud.

my belt is really close to the waterpump pulley... might be hitting on high rpm?

Not the fan shroud . I'm wondering if it could be something inside the steering gear box . Its never been apart that I know of . Steering is loose but I've been blameing that on it being a old e body ?

I often get a squell from the belt. In my case this seems to be a "HEMI" thing because every one I look at has a rub mark on the fan pulley...  :dunno:  Something ?
70 Chally R/T Convertible- Yes she's really got a HEMI, no she's not a Charger!

Changed the pump today $42.00 . Noise gone except at really high rpm's . I'm stumped . I wonder if my belt could be out of line . I got the motor in a box . To the eye it looks good . Going to wait and see for now . Could be my imagination but steering seems a lot tighter now ?
