    I'm curious as to what differences in the driving experiences between the 383, 426, and 440 six pack cars are. Assume the 383 has an auto, the Hemi can be either 4-speed or auto, and the 6 pack a pistol grip.

    383 packs 410 ftlbs of torque so I'm assuming it holds up pretty well with the bad boys, hmm?  :burnout:

    They are all going to be fast, so I really dont understand the question. Stock vs Stock, the Hemi will be the fastest in the 1/4, followed by the 440-6 pak, 440-4, and 383-4. In handling catagory, you wont see a huge difference because they are all big blocks and weigh a lot, the 383 might turn faster than the hemi because its lighter, but I have no experience to back that up. If your looking for handling than maybe you should bring the T/A into the comparison. As for the off the line catagory, its pretty much the same as the 1/4 except the 440 might beat the hemi off the line. BTW the 383 had 425 ft-lbs of torque and yes it does hold it own against the bigger big blocks.

    I'm asking more from a 'seat of the pants' experience, both off the line and during cruising speeds. OR are they all the same muscular monster, only in different degrees?

    An example is this. My former Honda Civic Si was gutless off the line but monster mad at 8200 RPM. However, the plain EX motor was more powerful offline but gutless at higher RPM's.

    Does the 383 suffer from high rpm asthma due to the carburetion as opposed to the 426 and 440 which have bigger carburetion systems (6V and 8V)

    That sort of thing. I hope I helped clear up what I was asking.  :thumbs:

    Yeah, they are pretty much the same monsters, but of different degrees. Ceteris paribus.......the 383 will be slower off the line vs the 440 because of the torque difference, but it will rev faster because of the stroke vs. bore againt the 440. The hemi will pull a lot stronger on the top end vs. the 440 because of the head flow characteristics. None of them jump at a high RPM like your civic Si....cause you had the power of V-TECH!!!!! :laughing: V-TECH BABY!!!! :laughing:

    440 is what you want if this is the sensation you are after. Much more torque at lower RPM equals better seat of the pants performance.

     You'll have to find and drive one [ test drive, friend,etc].   Its much different than a 1.6 liter, 2.0 liter motor.
     I had a 90 CRX Si. Quick but way different feel . Also had 300+ horse 4 cylinder turbo.  Even though that was a Rear Wheel Drive car it felt different than a V8 RWD.
     Even 318 can be impressive and get the tires roasting in an E-body.
     383 with auto could feasibly be faster if 440-6 pak car dropped clutch and lit tiers up in smoke....

    Having driven & built all of them the 383 is less torquey but will rev fast with some gear in them, the 383 has less stroke than the 360 
     the 440 & the 440+6 pull everywhere , they pull hard off the line with or without gear & just do not stop pulling , built properly with enough carb 7000 rpm is easy for the 440 & it pulls as hard there as anwhere
     Honestly most of the Hemis I have driven have Not impressed me , most people build them mild & do not run them hard due to the cost But the Hemi only works when it is run hard , with a mild hyd cam & detuned for street the combo is off & the heads start working when the cam quits , a 440 6 will kick its butt , the Hemi needs a solid cam , big converter , crossram intake with Holleys & some compression to be impressive , & they will impresss
     I have a friend with a hemi car & the engine was built & he was totally disappointed with it , I went throught the combo & offered to fix it , he trusted me & let me swap the cam & retune the engine , the car is totally different to drive & he is exstatic with it now , it starts & runs far better than before

    Chryco, do you think a 440-4bbl against a HEMI on the street both stock who would hit the 60mph hour first?

    Cars are set up the same, either Auto/Manual, same gears, weight, options etc etc Just different engines.

    From what I've heard, they would be about even....  The HEMI really doesn't pull away untill about 100 mph, I think.

    the 440 should outrun the hemi in short sprints everytime assuming the combo is the same , gearing , converter etc, the big down fall of the stock 440 was carburation Mopar decided to chock them until the TQ came out in 73 when the compression had all but disappeared , big carbs on 440 work , we gained 22 RWHP going from the stock 600 Holley to a 750 DP on a close to stock 383 , the 440 needs 850 Cfm

    Nope, just bolt on the carb, fine tune it and go. I recommend Holley because thats what I have.....its a 750 DP and other than a pump leak, it has been great. You may want to go bigger on that 440 though......

    Sorry guys not to hijack this thread but the only driving sensation we get is sitting on the carpet and makeing pretty authentic 383 engine sounds out of the sides of our mouths.  You guys are killing us with torque talk.   Got to hurry up!   :stomp:
