Braided stainless fuel line info ?
« on: May 09, 2013 - 10:15:24 PM »
My carb to fuel filter stainless steel fuel line makes contact in a couple places with the intake manifold and water pump on my 383. I have a shaker hood so its hard to route the existing line in a way that clears everything. I'm considering using a braided stainless line. Does anyone happen to know the proper (eldebrock carb) female thread to AN fitting part # ?  I could just call Earls in Indy, but if any of you would happen to know it would make life simpler.  :D
Thanks

If you go the braided stainless route, be prepared to replace your hose every 5 years or so. The ethanol content in modern fuels tends to break down the rubber in the hose and they develop little pinholes in them over time which will leak like a sieve.

I think the Ebrock fitting is 5/8-20 thread. I'd use Summit's site to search down options.

I've ran methanol with these lines in the past and assumed that ethanol would be ok. Am I wrong ?

What do most modern cars run then, as I am trying to figure this all also but will need injection line

Thanks, I,literally just spent the whole morning reading up on ptfe lines and stuff......seems like they are a long lasting hose. Won't be cheap either. There is even a place called techafx http://www.techafx.com/
not too far from me.

I plumbed my whole car with Teflon lined hose from these guys.
http://www.frozenboost.com/index.php?cPath=219&osCsid=bd3f0cc813549f1e8481f7db32c211a1

It was WAY cheaper than earls, Aeroquip etc( I think I spent less than 300 for the entire car and have lots left over.... and being Teflon lined  ethanol won't hurt the lines. At the moment I'm using a carb but this stuff is supposed to also be good for FI pressures. I used all black. This product assembles way easier than the others! It's been on the car a couple of years now with no issues! So far I'm happy! :2thumbs:

Thanks Brad those are some prices and their pressure test kit is cheap and smart too. Just trying to find their pressure setting for their hard line adapters but then if I go your route I won't need them

I did also buy some stainless 1/2" OD tubing and bend up some hard lines along the floor boards. I then used stainless Swagelok fittings  ( 1/2" tube adapters to 8AN ) Bought them off E-bay for $20 each I used 4 of them ( return line also) I also used fire sleeve around the exhaust.

well,,having said that,,does it also mean ANY rubber hose in the fuel system needs to be replaced in that same time frame??

i use steel braided lines at the carbs and fuel blocks as well at the tank connected to the elec pump but,,i also have a piece of speced std gas hose used at one point..life exp???

I had a salesman from Aeroquip on another forum tell me 4 years if you drained the fuel during winter storage and 1 year if you left it in? Keep in mind it's a salesman so they want to sell you more?
That's why you see so many Nascar take offs on E-Bay......
Ethanol is nasty stuff, I repair small engines for a living and go through a few spools of fuel line every year! Not only does it hurt fuel mileage, performance, and goes bad quicker, but it eats rubber too!

I would say so, but my practical experience has shown me that the plain old, black, rubber hose from the parts store breaks down differently. It tends to chunk up on the inside and flow debris into the carb then develops massive cracks. When I've used braided stainless, it develops hundreds of pin holes that look like a lawn springkler when put under pressure.

I've since converted to ptfe lined hose as well.
