Pictures of green bearings with c clips installed, anyone?
« on: May 11, 2013 - 10:33:03 AM »
Does anyone by chance have a picture of their green bearings with c clips installed in an 8 3/4" housing?

I am trying to figure out in my mind how the c clip comes into play as well as to what it should look like when I go to do my swap.

Dr Diff tells me that as long as the C lip is 1/8" away from the "end of the housing" , the thrust block will not need to be removed.....I cant quite place what this should look like...there is no groove or anything for the c clip to set into.....

Thanks folks!

No idea what you are talking about.  The green bearings do away with the adjustment required with the factory bearings.  The axles are still held inplace at each end of the housing.  There is no "c" clip like in a 8 1/4.  I thought the thrust button needed to be removed with the green bearings.

According to what I can find, there is a c clip at the bearing end of the axle when you use green bearings and it somehow helps position the bearing....

If I remember correctly the c clip is on the bearing and sets the depth that the bearing sets into the axel housing. Sorry no pics.

thereis a clip on the outside of the brg race that positions the brg in the housing end , it just slides in until the clip hits the brake backing plate .

Thats confusing me......so the clip actually sticks out on the backing plate side?

Dr Diff was saying that the green bearing clips "have to be 1/8" from the end of the housing" and I was assuming he meant 1/8" from the outside edge of the housing, meaning the clip would be recessed into the housing cavity......???

green arrows point to the clip...and I wouldn't call them "C-Clips".  They are like Spirolox Retaining Rings.

Thanks!

SO, the clip/ring just mash up against the housing end somehow?

I was told

"Most housings are not straight.  The snap ring allows the bearing to wiggle around inside the housing like a stock wheel bearing. It is much more forgiving than the first generation Green bearing with the solid, crimped on retainer.  In addition, because the crimped on retainer is not in the correct location, it causes the axles to be inserted deeper into the spline which will preload the thrust block inside the differential.

If the caliper brackets are designed correctly, the snap-ring will install 1/8" away from the housing end, and you do not need to remove the thrust block."

I understand that with the caliper adaptor plate, the whole deal you show will be further out of the housing....

What happens, though, if you use green bearings with the drum brakes? Or cant you?

"SO, the clip/ring just mash up against the housing end somehow?"

When you insert the axles they go all the way in until that retaining ring is up against the brakes backing plate.  Then you tighten the retaining plate just like on your stock axles.  Green bearings work exactly the same whether you have drum brakes or disc brakes.  You either have a drum brake backing plate or you have a caliper mount that needs to get sandwiched in between the housing ends and the retaining plate.  I think you are over analyzing this.

Maybe this will help...

Thats what I needed!  Just couldnt figure out WTH that retaining clip/ring went.....since it was referred to by many folks as a "clip"....

"Now I see!" said the blind man...LOL  Thanks for showing me the way!

Over-analyzing?  But of course! Its ME!    LOL  I just do not want to make a decision and be caught with my pants down if its the wrong one based on incomplete info etc....

Ok, can you guys take a look at this and tell me if you think I am good to go?  Both axles look the same, but there is some "silver" where the old bearing pressed to.

The guy who installed these says that that was it and they werent moving any further.....should I be ok?

the brgs should seat against a shoulder on the axle but the stock retainers do have a grease seal so that is probably where that seal was

Thanks!  That is what I was hoping....seems like they seat fine in the housing as far as distance, etc.
