Tires too big?

I put new BFG Radial TAs on my challenger today. The backs are 255/60R15 on American racing Outlaw II rims. One tire rubs on the sidewall when I go over a bump so we ground a little off the wheel well lip. How in the H do you guys run 275s on there?

How much back space on the rims? You need 3.5" to run larger tires.

I run 275's, never had an issue... check your back space..

BIG, what backspace do you have? I'll have to pull a tire and check mine. I know there is a bit of room between tire and spring. I bought the rims from Summit Racing and told them they were going on a 74 Challenger. You would think they would send the right stuff but I got less than ten miles on them and we heard them rub when I crossed a RR track. I'm not a happy camper.

I'm running wheel vintique (ralley's)15X8's in the rear w 4.5 back space. I've driven from lake michigan to mopars on the mississippi w NO issues . I've lit 'em up NO issues...

I pulled a wheel and the backspace is 3 3/4. So that's my problem. Now I have to get new rims to replace my new rims. Do you think Summit will exchange them?

They don't make that rim with a 4 1/2 backspace. Can't even custom order it. Might go to a 245 tire to gain a fraction or might just live with it. How can I stiffen the rear springs a bit to reduce the chance of it hitting.

Once you mount a tire, you own it. That is usually in the fine print of any rim sale.

3 3/4" back space is a problem. You can sell and buy new rims, run skinnier tires, trim the fender lip, roll the fender lip, or, get under the car and start tweaking the axle housing position to try and equalize it between the sides. Center the axle, roll the lips, and you might get away with it.

BTW, you don't have new quarters on your car do you? These have notoriously wider lips on the wheel openin compared to stock.

yea its the backspacing..i just put on 275/60s with a 4.5 b.s.  very close to lip but no rubs..even at the r.r. tracks..and agreed u mount them they are usually yours...good luck

Can you get a 15x9 with 5" backspace?
That should work.
The 3 3/8" or 3 3/4" backspace is generally a ford thing.
Chryslers are generally in the 4 - 5" backspace range depending on rim width.

The tires are 255/60 15. Switch the rear end out? You guys are getting a little extreme on me here!! I'm not over the top about having to have a huge tire. The car had 205s when I bought it and I thought something a little meatier would look good. I like those rims, it's too bad I can't get them with a bigger backspace. I've done a little trimming, we'll see how it goes. I may end up going with 245s. That would gain me .2" which isn't much but I think that would give me the room I need if I still need more.

How much material is on the back face of the rim? Just a thought.... maybe I could machine some off to get you some extra clearance?    Your not that far from me I thought? ( I'm in Barrie)
