Emergency brake/Parking brake kit
« on: May 12, 2013 - 01:16:25 AM »
My car has nothing except the interior pedal. No cables, clamps or anything. I see Inline sells a complete kit, but have read about problems with cable length. Bill Rolik sells stuff. The Right Stuff apparently isn't in business anymore (no website that I could find)? But you can buy their stuff from Summit and Jegs? Also, one site mentioned something about 2 different setups. One cable and two cables. How do I tell which one I need? 72 Challenger with stock drum brakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I can't help you with any answers re: the kits but, your comment re: TRS caught my attention (and stopped my heart -- that's where we intend to get the 14" disc conversion kits for my wife's '66 GTO!).

Anyway, I am pretty sure they are still in business; we received not one but two catalogs from 'em within the last month that are glossier than any coffee table art book I've ever seen and must cost at least $30 or $40 to print, per catalog.  Incredible!!!!

Anyhoo, try 'em here:  http://www.getdiscbrakes.com/

1970 is a one year only setup.  Your 72 uses two equal length rear cables that are anchored at each frame rail.

Fine Lines sells kits made by The Right Stuff.  That's the kit I bought and something isn't right. I think there is a problem with the length of the rear cables...I just have't taken them back off to figure it out.  If I were you, I'd buy the kit from Inline Tube.

Thanks. I need to get this sorted out before I do my subframe connectors. I want to add a tube thru the subframe connectors to let the cables work in and out of to the subframe connectors. I need emergency brake cables before I can do that.

My opinion on the kits available is that they made one intermediate cable for both Cuda and Challenger and they copied the Cuda when they did so. This would mean that the Challenger one comes up short.
The 2" difference in wheelbase would have a great effect on the middle cable. :2cents:

I'm just going by memory right now but I'm pretty sure my original intermediate cable is the same length as my new one.  If you measure the rear cables(longest point to longest point) they measure the same as my original rear cables.  However, the outer sheath is longer then the originals.(there is more cable sticking out past the end of the sheath on the original cables)  This means when you hook the ends up to the frame brackets, this pulls the end of the cable too far back....making the intermediate cable too short.  Once I have a chance to pull off the rear cables, I'll take some pics of them side by side.  I might have to buy two rear cables from Inline Tube to get things hooked up. For whatever reason, The Right Stuff said they couldn't make me a custom length intermediate cable.

just to clarify  70 is one year only & has a front cable from the pedal to a balacer braket & one cable to each wheel , the left wheel cable is very short , the right one crosses the car above the diff & is much longer, 3 cables total .
71-74 uses 4 cables , a front cable to the rear of the T bar area hooking onto the mid cable in the front left corner , a mid / intermediate cable that does a U under the car from leaf spring eye forward & across the T bar crossmember & back to the other leaf spring eye with a hook in the front right corner , and 2 cables one from each wheel forward to the spring eye area on each frame rail .

Whose kits do they sell?  I suggest everyone measure their original cables first. Then call a manufacturer and get the lengths of the cables they sell.  Everyone says they copied original cables but there wouldn't be these problems if that were true.

I don't have original set up. Nothing. I caled Inline, and contrary to what I've read here, according to them, you could have either/or. I will crawl underneath and take a peek. Driver side wheel area has a bracket welded to the body if it is without intermediate. otherwise, it looks like it would be with intermediate. it's cold and I'm a weenie, so I wlil wait until warmer weather. You can google and get a pdf of both types of systems to check and make sure which one you have.

I too am working on this set-up for my 72. I have some missing parts apparently as I only have one threaded rod, no cable "clips" I do have the small curved piece. I saw the inline tube routing for 72 cars. Is this correct? Does anyone have a pic or a link of the cable routing for a 72 Challenger? Thanks in advance!

I just did a google of Challenger park brake pics, and on the second page it listed in line tubes installation page. Click on that and it takes you to inline tubes installation site, then click on your aplpication and it opens up to a pdf file and you can compare intermediate  to without intermediate. Complicated, I know. I hope it helps.

I realize this is an older thread, but I wanted to refresh the questions/issues, as I am in need of a kit for my '70 Challenger (w/o intermediate cable). What have been your recent experiences with Inline Tubes and/or Fine Lines for their E-brake cable kits (specifically regarding cable length accuracy, quality of manufacturing, and customer service satisfaction)? Any other recommendations for vendors/manufactures? I only want to do this once w/o the nightmares I've read about from other member's past experiences. Thanks.
