Maybe its just not seated yet(I hope). Engine builder said drive it?

A good machine shop will have the proper equipment to do a plateau finish hone on the
cylinders. If that was done properly, the rings would be all but fully seated by the time the engine
was assembled. I have used Sunnen plateau stones in my CK10 for years and never had a ring problem.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

On initial start up after rebuild did you have any problem getting it to fire,
If you had a rough time getting it to start you can damage the rings.  Over cranking.
After rebuild it is recommended to open road driving.   Excessive idling ( low speeds, traffic lights ) not recommended on rebuilds.
Is it black or white smoke?

Yesterday tried driving it but the smoke got so excessive I had to take it home. Blowing oil out the left valve cover breather. Checked the plugs and #5 cylinder was oil covered, all others looked good. Pulled the left head and the head gasket is shoved out about the top deck of the head, I guess into the rocker arm area. I may not have torqued them in the proper series.?  !st picture is being pushed up but 2nd pic is the problem.

Weird , to me it looks like it hydrauliced , too much fuel or oil in the chamber forcing the gasket out , basically the thead torques down in a circle from the center out , I use 4 steps , maybe 50lbs first & then 10 or 15 lb increments to max torque . What type / make of head gasket did you use ?
I am glad you found the problem at least .

great, hopefully an easy fix then, new gasket.
Maybe gasket bad/defective.
if improper torquing of head bolts, would think other cylinder would have issues.

check valve train associated with that cylinder, to make sure nothing else caused the gasket
to go bad.

make sure head and block in that area are flat, not warped.

Fellpro gaskets 8553PT, cylinder 3,5 & 7 were pushing up # 5 became the problem. Block and heads were decked, as hot as it got when they first started the engine, could that have caused the problem? I didn't know a torque series when I put these on. What is the proper lbs. of torque for these heads?

a book like this might help. There's definitely a specific sequence for torquing up the head bolts.  This book seem awefully expensive though!!

With that much oil at the head I'd still check the ring to see if it actually seated in #5.

Heads are torqued in sequences of 3 and in order to keep the uniformity of torque. This is fairly standard across many diff manufacturers.

Over heating was done by the men that did the final body work and paint. I told them not to start it until I was there, so they started it anyway. The timeing was so far off it would barely run. When I went back they started it and it sounded awful, three minutes and the headers were cherry red(I was too).
I put it back together yesterday, first few minutes it put out a lot of smoke. The more I drove it, the more it cleared up. After 15 minutes it was hard to see a trace of smoke. Its torqued down right now, hopefully that will be the end of that problem. Thanks for the help

Terrible way to break in a motor! It may have, if it starts smoking again I'll know why this time. If they knew how much work went into bring that motor together maybe they would have listened to me when I said don't start it. Good for now, maybe I can enjoy it now!
