leaf spring shackle bumps frame
« on: May 27, 2013 - 12:33:35 PM »
Hi folks, I have 70 cud a with rear offset kit. stock height espo springs(They replaced the new mopar springs with same result). in the rear I get the leaf spring eye or bottom of shackle smacking the Rear frame rail. My question is, if I go to a 1" taller spring will that give me a shorter distance from leaf spring eye to eye measurement due to more arch?Do they make a leaf spring with a shorter overall length? Any thoughts?????

What front spring hangers are you using?  If they are the "super-stock" ones, they are for the shorter (a-body length) springs.

Is it hitting the frame in front of the shackle mountinghole or in back? On a Cuda, I thought it would hit the valance before it hit the frame. Also, did you do a side by side comparison of the springs to ensure they are the correct type? Espo is good, but they aren't immune from the occasional human goof. Fai.ing that, can you give us teh measurements of the spring from eye to eye, and front eye to mounting pin?
Also, like changin gears asked, what fornt hangers do you have? The additional 2" length in some offset hangers could have shoved your whole spring pack back too far.

If you have the correct length spring the shackle should be verticle = or - 30* or so

I have the 1" relocate kits as well and I remember having to mill down the bumper bracket as the shackle was hitting it? :dunno:

.... but that was with the hyperco spring which is 20 1/2" front segment . I welded up the holes in the front spring hanger and moved the hole a 1/2"

Dr diff kit. The spring basically becomes too long, as the shackles are almost fully extended to the rear. I cannot fit my finger between spring and valance. I feel that if the spring was shorter from the axle to the rear an inch it would be fine.
Last response is dea-on as it really is the bumper brackets getting smacked.

Looks like my springs are 58" eye to eye. As the car is sitting on the ground. My wheels look to be sitting exactly in the middle of wheel opening which is good! There is evidence of the spring hitting the valance also. Anyone else have a measurement on the leafs?

I just measured my newer ESPO springs that are  off the car and they are 53 1/4" eye to eye. Sort of a hard thing to measure as different arc and weight on them will all create different measurements.

My OE springs on the ground measure 57" center to center.....How many bodies you have in the trunk will effect this somewhat, mines empty......almost.

OE should be 57", 22" front segment, 35" rear segment. If they are indeed 58" they are B body springs. 22" front, 36" rear.
