looks like I`m the only one here, but I would toss any tire older than 6-7 years.  From around that age you could be facing delamination. Perhaps you could drive another 10 years with them, but personally I would not take the risk.   :2cents:
I agree with all above on the bfg`s... most are square to begin with  :P

Toss them. The rubber gets hard like you're running on steel bands.

I am in the same boat "or in this case classic car" as the OP 14 inch rims and old tires with dryrot/cracking on the sidewall. So I am going to be looking for new shoes for my ride. Oh by the way Hello ehornung that is one sweet lookin ride you have there! The question I have is why is everyone down on BFG`s?  :dunno: I thought they were a decent tire?

It seems options are limited with 14" rims. What did Cuda`s and Chally`s originally have for rubber back in the day, and are they available today? Were there more than brand of tire offered?

Looks like a lot more options for tire choices with 15"rims, guess I will be spending even more money in the near future!  :faint:
What is the go to tire everyone uses for that classic look? Like the OP I am pretty much clueless when it comes to tire choices. I know they are black and round and have air in them after that I don`t know!

I went with Firestone Indy 500 tires. Only thing is I'm not quite sure they still make them? I'm considering 17" or 18" due to the poor selection of performance tire choices in 15"

Ive had BFGs on several cars, and I agree they arent great, but....they are fine for just cruising around with in good weather. They have the look you are looking for, and if they are the only tire you can find that fits I wouldnt hesitate.
If you do have 5.5" rims, a 245 tire is too wide. Thats almost 10 inches of tread fitting a 5.5" rim?! You must have something wider than that. Definitely confirm your rim width before purchasing, especially if you buy online.

Hmmmmm.....   I was considering going to 225 or 235 60 R14's all around.   I was told 225 would be best..... but 235 might look better.  But...  since the 14" wheels are already small... maybe going to 70 series would look better?....  I'm getting confused :)

70 series are taller & skinnier , the 235 is the tread width & the sidewall  height is 70% on 60 %

Thanks for responding!  No relation to Paul unfortunately.  I think I'd like to keep the stock wheels, which are 14's....  so I think I'll go shop for some of those BFG TA's.

Ok I  Have read most of this thread,we all know these cars handle like a bunch of rubber bands on 14,s..right? so keep the current set up on wheels and toss  them as far back in the garage as you can.


Get some new  15x 7,s rallyes ,mount the best tire ,and see if you can tell the difference in the way the car drives/handles,if you dont like it go back to the 14 inch donuts,....and please don't tell me those 14,s are better than 15,s .......FFS

Lets see...  The last time I owned a 70's car was in the 70's....  so I really don't remember how they're supposed to ride/feel.  Does this 72 with 14's ride like my 2011 Challenger RT with 18's?  Ahhhhh... no.   But my first thought was since this car made it 41 years on these, and has really spent most all of it's life sitting in a garage.... I might as well keep it stock and try not to put too many miles on it.  Enough to have some fun on nice weekends, but that's all.  That's why I thought I'd just keep it the way it came.  This isn't going to be my daily driver ever, but yes I do want it to be fun when I do drive it.  I think I'll get the leaf springs/shocks and assorted small repairs done... then worry about tires.
