horn button and lock disc removal?
« on: March 21, 2005 - 02:00:19 PM »
I know this is an easy one. Its got to be because I cant even find it in the manual. I need to disassemble my steering coumn so I can send it out for powder coat and cannot figure out how to remove the horn button. Push down and twist CCW right? Not mine.  :gripe:

Somone PLEASE enlighten me  :dontknow:

I just removed the one on my '73 Cuda, it just pulls off.  You may have to pry it with a screwdriver or something.

yeppirs, its just like you fellers said. She popped right off of there. I was gonna do that but I have broken enough stuff already  :gripe:

Ok, how about the lock disc? The book shows a crafty tool that slips around the shaft and presses a pin out. Problem is I dont see a pin anywhere. I must be missing something here  :???

I dont understand;I removed the lock ring already; as far as I can see the gear is swaged onto the hub. it swivels a little bit but its not moving readilly. Are you saying the gear needs to be pryed off of the hub?

Mike there is still a collar on there just like CP said.  A small screwdriver and wiggle it down from lock disk.  There is a pin under the collar.

4C - the "collar" that you are pointing at looks to be part of the gear and doesnt appear to come off. You are saying that collar should pry off of the gear and hub both?

If you look closely you'll see that the collar 4C has marked is a thin metal sleeve that is pressed down around the hub of the lockring.

Even though it looks like it is one piece . . . it is not. That sleeve does come off and the pin is under it!

ok, got er done  ;)

With a ginger tap from a chisel, the keeper collar came right off. Whodathunk it? I would have sworn it was all one pice with the lock disc. So now that she's totally disassembled I have another question. Where do you get the bearing for the cabin end of the column?
