Converting 72-74 rallye dash to 70-71
« on: June 03, 2013 - 11:16:47 AM »
Hi,
I was wondering what was involved $$$ in converting 72-74 rallye dash to 70-71...

Here is what I think is required but would need your help to confirm:
70-71 dash lense (200$)
Drill a hole in woodgrain inlay for reset knob (0$)
70-71 speedometer (? $)
70-71 8k tach (? $)
All the rest is the same isn't it?  :clueless:

You'll also need a new clock w/reset cable. It's reset knob protrudes from the woodgrain overlay as well.

Drilling holes in the woodgrain may not look 100%, the original ones are kinda dimpled inward, if I'm explaining that correctly enough.

Don't some of the later dashes have a seatbelt light or something on the right?  :clueless:

wiper switch, headlight switch has a small picture of each next to them. 70-71's didn't.

Summary: Pretty hard to fake a 70/71 dash layout.   :2cents:
Even then, there's small differences between the years.

You will be far better off selling what you have and buying the guages you want.

Here's what I figured so far:
1 - New lense =205$
http://www.pgclassic.com/advanced_search_result.php?inc_subcat=1&keywords=%20&categories_id=37&manufacturers_id=4&azrefine=1
2 - New 70-71 clock + reset cable = 350$
3 - New 70-71 bezel = 185$
http://www.pgclassic.com/advanced_search_result.php?inc_subcat=1&keywords= &categories_id=56&manufacturers_id=4&azrefine=1
4 - Other small gages are same 70-74 = 0$
5 - Tach is ok even if 7k becase 8k was for 1970 cuda's mostly. Mine is 71 cuda clone (with 72 rallye gauges)

Total = 740$ not counting the new speedometer I have yet to find but will most likely be over 250$

So with taxes and shipping, it is over 1000$ to convert.

Is it worth it???

A restored 71 on eBay is 2500$

Some things you might want to do while everything is out.

Electronic Voltage limiter.
Quartz clock conversion.

I recommend to have your OEM units sent out for re build/conversion.

Recently I bought a reproduction tachometer.
It didn't match the rest of the guages so I sent it back and had mine gone thru.

Does this help, picture taken from ebay.

As for the tach, my understanding is that the 8K tachs are the more desirable ones. If it were me, I'd just leave it or look for a 7K tach and sell the 8K one.

Yeh I am leaving it, as for tach my assumption is it's a late 71 can't explain the fasten seatbelt light
