Removed my cluster - Cluster - Done.... I hope!
« on: June 06, 2013 - 09:24:33 PM »
Ok, I started a thread in the electrical section. You ever notice how one thing leads to another??? The burnt terminal blocks on the fire wall was my next discovery. My amp meter has been a bit erratic for awhile.  First off if your going to due this tape the entire top of the colum, I got lazy and ksksksksksk  put a nice scratch in the paint.  :banghead:  When I got the cluster out there was some discoloration on the back of the cluster case. But when I pulled out the amp meter it looked good (to me anyway). I thought I'd see something burnt looking??  :dunno: Opinions........... ??

1.  I would've dropped the steering column and if necessary pull the steering wheel to get it even lower.

2.   I would enter your fingers in the ugly finger contest.

Don't take it personally.
If you saw mine, I would be a close competitor.

My opinion - The nuts on the ammeter studs make a far better, more solid, connection than the spade connectors in the bulkhead. That's why it's burned where it is.

BTW the insulators on the meter were good on both sides of the cluster case............

Regardless of how it 'looks', it is a poorly designed electrical system. IMO, since 100% originality is not important to you (i think?), bypass it and use a voltmeter to monitor your charging system. Sending full alternator output through the bulkhead connector and the amp gauge is just asking for problems. And the older it gets, the more likely a problem will occur.  :2cents:

Scott, you are correct on both points.  :grinyes:  It just seems odd to say the least that the firewall blocks show damage (both alt & batt) and this piece looks fine.  :screwy:

:iagree:  If you are staying completely stock and aren't adding any extra electrical loads it's OK.  As soon as you start adding anything extra, you're asking for trouble.  It's simple to change.

I still have my amp gauge hooked up and so far so good but I ran a heavy gauge wire from the alternator to the battery in an attempt to sort of bypass it somewhat?

Hijack! How do you bypass the ammeter? I need to do this.

It just seems odd to say the least that the firewall blocks show damage (both alt & batt) and this piece looks fine.  :screwy:
Well, heat builds up (regarding electrical current flow) wherever the resistance is not zero. Wires in good condition can be considered zero ohms. Connectors in good clean condition are close to zero ohms, but not as good as a solid piece of wire. The problem with connectors carrying full system current flow is they have some resistance. And a small resistance with a lot of current translates into some heat being created. When heat is created, the metal connectors expand. When you shut the car off, the metal contracts. After years of expanding and contracting, the connectors are not as 'tight' fitting, creating higher resistance. Which then creates more heat, eventually melting or burning the connector. As Jaybee mentioned, the ammeter has better, more solid connections than the bulkhead connector, so your first indication of an electrical system issue was at the bulkhead connector. If one of the nuts on your ammeter had loosened a bit over the years, your ammeter gauge would have started to melt instead. (Glad it didn't)
