While you have the amp meter out you can solder the two studs to the brass plates they attach to and this will create a solid contact in an area that can be a problem.

its a disease I tell ya, its past the stage of addiction!  Sent half my cluster to Shannon @ Redline today. Yes I could have ran the "wire" , but my OP gauge has read way to high (Shannon said the top is 80psi) and my clock never did work. He said 2-3 weeks turnaround.   :-\   But the weathers been so crappy here on most days that I dont think I'll be missing much.  Of corse ol' BIGS will update as things happen...  :grinyes:    :working:

the fastest way to simply bypass the ammeter is to connect both wires to one stud

Neil my freind you are absolutely correct. That being said, with whats already been invested I see no reason to short cut.  I like the volt meter idea.  My Pontiac came w the idiot lights and I converted to gauges (swaped cluster and sensors). Its apart, may as well get the OP gauge and clock done. I hate taking things apart twice if I can avoid it. When I did the speedo & tach some years back it wasnt an issue. I think adding the pusher fan started wearing on the system. And I was sure I got the lowest amp draw one that I could. Other than bulbs, I never want to screw with it again. I'll update as it goes.

Why would you want to leave the power running through the bulkhead connections?
Would think adding the new wire from alt. to battery would be the way to go.

I bypassed mine by putting the two ring terminals on a bolt with a nut and taped the whole thing. I also had the ammeter converted to a voltmeter.

I talked to Shannon @ REDLINE yesterday. He's got the cluster and gonna work his magic.  While I'm waiting, I'll put the 2 leads together. Then I have to fix the scratch I put in the top of my steering colum. I'm really trying to figure a way tp spray it w/o total colum removal. Those under dash gymnastics just kill my back & neck. Something tells me to save a pile of newspapers...........

I found it easier to just take the seat out now when I have to work under the dash. I can lay flatter and not screw up my back.

I agree!  I have buckets and the only way I can access the drivers side under-dash is to remove the seat's 4 bolts.  For the passenger side I don't have to remove the seat.

I'm tossing around having my gauges done by redline or going custom gauges.  If you don't mind me asking,  how much did it set you back?

highspeeddirt- here's the breakdown - clock conversion to quartz/convert amp meter to volt/detail cluster (gauge faces and lense)/voltage stabilizer (to prevent nuclear meltdown)/calibrate gauges/shipping & $700 insurance / 2 yr warranty $454

I fixed the scratch on the colum tonite. I'm hoping I get the cluster back by friday, to make it down to the fox lake show on sunday.
