Re: Removed my cluster - REDLINE already done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
« Reply #30 on: June 18, 2013 - 05:03:17 PM »
I'm tossing around having my gauges done by redline or going custom gauges.  If you don't mind me asking,  how much did it set you back?

Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2

For those who might be considering Redline, they do great work and are a great buch of guys.

Here's my breakdown:

** Speedometer "repair" = $180.  This is a recommendation from Redline.  I explained to them that the speedo looks like it's brand new.  They said it's best to take it apart, inspect, re-lube and calibrate.

** Tach Conversion to solid state = $200.  They don't use RTE or PDD boards, or MSD adapters.  They have their own conversion approach.  I'd rather have it done by professionals, rather than trying to do it myself.  I have read where others have done this fairly easily using the above mentioned conversion options, but I feel it's best to leave this to those who have done it for years.

** Solid State Voltage Limiter = $43.

** Calibrate: Fuel, Oil, Temp Gauges = $40 (1/2 hour labor).

** Quartz Clock Conversion = $80 (1 hour labor).  They used the conversion kit I bought several years ago (same as the one they use), and just charged me labor for install.

** Amp to Volt Meter Conversion = $160.  This should be done considering the power hungry non-stock add-ons (i.e. audio system, etc.).  Besides, it's just simply a safer alternative.

** Assembly and Detail = $80 (1 hour labor).  This includes polishing the clear plastic gauge/instrument cluster lens.

** All needles were repainted (except for the Tach, as it was a fully restored original instrument that I bought a few years ago)

** I ended up having to buy a housing from them because the previous owner had enlarged the Tach hole for an Autometer Tach (I didn't even notice this when I took the Autometer Tach out), and the original tach would't work in the enlarged hole.  Redline had some extras, and the cost was VERY reasonable.  They bead blast the housings and the backside of the instruments to look new.

Total cost out the door = $820.00  (However, my rates were quoted to me at the end of Feb, before they had to increase pricing by 10% due to typical factors.  So add an additional $80.00 for today's rates)

For more info on my Rallye cluster and switch panel restoration, see the following post that I started at the beginning of March.  I'll be adding a bit more after I do the new woodgrain faceplate on the cluster bezel.

I got the cluster back in tonite!

I had to reinstall my speedo / tach  as they were restored a few years back. I only used the finest Canadian imported speedo grommets.  These are a crucial step often overlooked! Do not be fooled by imitations.  THANKS BRAD!  :worshippy +Things went pretty smoothly with the exception of the cable for the clock set. I neglected to test fit the cover on the cluster before the install. I had to make a special tool to hold it to the side to get the adjuster (Ferrell??) seated on it.  I will loan this tool to any member in need.  ::)  No time to fire her up for a test yet, but I didn't have any screws left over!   :woo:  They also sent a little diagram of how to read the gauge.

Well I had her out this weekend. Met up w MOPAR FANATIC  Saturday nite, And went down to the FOX LAKE show today.
And of Corse there's a few things I need to address.... ever notice how one thing leads to the next...   :eek7:

First off my fuel gauge finally reads all the way full. Haven't seen that till I pulled the 5/16 and went with the 3/8.  Oil Press still reads 80 psi most of the time... once good and hot aybe down to 65 at idle. Is my OP that's good... really ?  :clueless:

Secondly my volt gauge (amp converted) is erratic as all get out. Worst at idle, solid at highway speeds. I think I saw a post on that someplace....  :dunno:

Third........ THE NEW CLOCK DONT WORK.   :swear:  Granted, I did not check the hot lead for "hot" before reassembly.... but everything else in the cluster had power. There are no blown fuses/suspicious looking wiring/bad grounds that I am aware of.  Lets pull the dash apart again....  yay!   :faint:

That's a bummer! If it's any consolation I've had my speedo out 2X and it's still not right either.

Clock has it's own power lead seperate from the gauges.  :2cents:
Maybe it got knocked off when you were mounting the gauge panel?

I went out and took the dash apart AGAIN.  I slowly pulled out the cluster to take a pic...... ALL wiring attached. Put a test light to the clock lead and grounded it..... LIGHT!!!!
Now correct me if I'm wrong, I'm guessing the clock grounds through the housing???? I attempted to run the clock off the battery.......... grounding the clock housing itself and then the entire cluster housing.............. NOTHING..........  :villagers:  :banghead:  :stomp:  :pullinghair:  :swear:  hello...??? Shannon........... or am I wrong... ??  :dunno:

If you put 12vdc on the clock spade lug and connected the housing to ground and got nothing from the clock, unfortunately, your clock is broken.  :crying:

I've been using a 12V 7a/h SLA for testing. Worth a try before sending it back.

Sorry to hear about your situation.  I'm interested in hearing about what Redline does and/or says about this.  I was fortunate to be able to pick up my cluster in person, and have Shannon perform a bench test on all instruments/gauges (while I watched).  Everything worked perfectly "on-the-bench".  I only hope that the same holds true when it's installed and running on the vehicle's electrical system.  It will be several months before I get to that point.
