Door Edge Guards...
« on: June 09, 2013 - 09:38:06 PM »
I'm currently restoring a 1971 440+6 Challenger R/T (look for pictures in the member resto section)
http://www.alangallantautomotiverestoration.com/1971-440-6-Challenger.html

According to the broadcast sheet the car left the factory wearing chrome door edge guards.

I've hunted down a set of NOS originals still in the Mopar wrappers....

Question is: Do I install them as per the BCS, or do I leave them in the wrappers in the trunk ?

If this car was a "keeper" long term, then YES I would install them. I think it would look different and be a cool conversation piece.

However, I do intend on selling this car, and I'm not sure if they will wreck the paint/stripes and whether or not a new owner would appreciate them as I do....

Or offer the buyer the option of installing them or leaving them off.

My 70 Roadrunner had these when I bought it in 74,  I hated how they dug into the paint creating places for rust to start.  I would absolutely leave them in the trunk, no downside with that and the customer will probably be glad you didn't put them on.

Trunk.  It'll mess up any stripe you put on the car.

Plus the fact that you still have the original wrappers is very cool!  8)

I thought it was such a unique option that it would be cool (different) to actually see a restored car with them on. :dunno:

Put them on a shelf and offer them up to the customer. If he doesn't want them, sell them.  :grinyes:

They are unique for sure. Trouble is they are ugly (IMO) and detract from the car.

I would think those NOS guards you have there must be pretty valuable.

I'm sorta a "by the sheet" kinda guy...the type of guy that would put body side molding on a Hemicuda if that was the way it came....I'm having a hard time with this.... :pullinghair:

I've heard that these would have been installed at the dealer sort of like chin spoilers, floor mats and other items ????? Wonder if there's any truth to that ? :clueless:

Fair enough, but are you willing to install them and possibly lose the sale? And someone said
they would damage the paint if removed? I still say, let the buyer make the choice. Can't screw anything up that way.

I like the option of telling the customer this is how the car came from the factroy if you want me to put them on I will, otherwise they come in the trunk.

I really do like to see cars that are all original get restored to all original condition but you run a business restoring these things so you know the market better than anyone here.

I would personaly put them on, but if i had a car like that the day it went up for sale would be the day after I Die.

WoW, I have never seen a set installed on a car, wonder how it would look.  Anybody have any pics?   I always thought the aftermarket ones did more damage to the paint than offer any protection.
