North America's Fastest Production Cars
« on: March 23, 2005 - 05:55:32 PM »
Has anyone seen this link?
http://www.autofacts.ca/classics/fast.htm

It is a list of the all-time fastest (1/4 mile acceleration) cars of all-time.
I bet there are many European "sports car" fans who are in shock when they read that a Plymouth and Dodge top all others including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, etc.    ;D

Here are the top 5:

1. 1968 Plymouth S/S Barracuda, 426-Hemi, 525 hp, 10.5 secs @ 130 mph
2. 1968 Dodge S/S Hemi Dart, 426-Hemi, 525 hp, 10.5 @ 129 mph
3. 2003 Ferrari Enzo, 6.0 L V-12, 660 hp, 10.8 @ 135 mph
4. 1969 Chevrolet Corvette, ZL1 427, 430 hp, 10.9 @ 132 mph
5. 2004 Porsche Carrera GT, 5.7 L V-10, 612 hp, 11.0 @ 130 mph

The link was on a car-related board and someone already said something like "Well, you can't really call those Mopars production cars." Yes, they were production cars!

Heh-heh... not with me.
I like how one magazine put it, when they had a top 10 muscle cars of all-time list... they said most people don't include those S/S Hemi Mopars since they were faster than everything else! The mag then said, "Not here, baby, it's holds down a big numero uno!"

But weren't these S/S cars non-road legal? Built only for track?  :dontknow:

It was a loophole rule. They came with functional lights and windshield wipers and I've seen a few at car shows which were driven off the street.
The main concern was that the side windows were plastic, not glass (but many convertibles have plastic back windows).

In either case, they were production cars. First, compare to the #3 spot on the list (the $652,000 Ferrari)... those Mopars sold for $4,000-$5,000 when new. Anyone who could afford a new Cadillac or Lincoln or even a Corvette at the time could afford a Hemi S/S Mopar.
Also, all one had to do to buy one was walk into the same dealer that sold Slant Six Valiants and Plymouth Fury Station Wagons and place their order (if their timing was right- the S/S cars were limited production).

They have updated their list. The Enzo is now 11.0 sec @ 133.9 mph which puts it in 4th place and the Corvette has moved up to 3rd place. That makes the top three spots held by American cars. All right!  ;D
