Manual transmission and a bench seat?
« on: June 11, 2013 - 10:31:49 AM »
Figured I would put this in other mopars since I am inquiring about my satellite lol. 74 satellite, bench seat, auto on the column. Every place I look for a manual conversion says that you can't run a bench with a manual (my guess is because of the size of the trans tunnel). Any thoughts on how I could make it happen? My bench seat is in really good shape so I can't justify getting rid of it. Worse case scenario I may have to put in an OD auto so I can keep the bench lol.

The good news is that '71-4 B-bodies like your Satellite were indeed available with a manual transmission.

There is a special floor hump that looks like an E-body one but is approximately 2/3s shorter front-to-back

Pistol grip shifter handle is unique (again, bigger than E-body, but smaller than '70 B-body)

The shifter mechanism is mounted to a 'dogbone' adapter to move it forward on the tailshaft.  Though IIRC the shifter box is the same as E-body (7180 stamped on reverse lever), the shift rods are unique to your application.

Here's a picture of a 71 Charger with a bench seat and 4 speed. Basically the same interior as your Plymouth. Go for it!!

I suppose I should have put this in previously lol. But I am thinking a 5 speed rather than a 4. Not quite sure if I can get one of those to fit in there. I suppose the Passon unit would fit, since it is supposed to be the same dimensions as the 4 speed. Wonder if there is another one that would fit?

Decided I will look at an 833OD 4 speed, probably the easiest solution to this problem. Just out of curiosity is that how it would appear stock? Wondering if that is the type of boot it would have on it, or if they looked different.

Also what do you guys think I should do about the column shift. I don't want to just leave it there. And removing the shifter will leave a hole. So I figured I either had to find another interior piece for a manual and maybe paint it to match my interior, or do some bondo work on my current piece to make it look right.

the Keisler / Tremec will not work the shift mount is at the rear where the regular E body would mount , you need to be further forward to clear the seat , the regular 833 can have the gear vendors conversion add to it making it an 8 speed or you can use the 833 OD using the forward mounting for the shifter

That's what I did years ago on the Roadrunner.  You just need the top two round outer pieces (if I remember correctly) of a floor shift column.  You can use the rest of your stock column.
