fuel sending unit ohm reading?
« on: June 14, 2013 - 10:24:13 AM »
I'm trying to figure out my fuel gauge problems. When I ground out the gauge at the tank to gauge goes right past full. I took the sending unit out and with a digital volt/ohm meter, with the ohm setting on the 200 scale I get 0.41 empty and 00.8 full. On the 2000 scale I get 013 empty and 002 full. Using the full range of the sending unit. It's an aftermarket sending unit that's maybe a few years old. Does this sound about right?

You may have to add a jumper wire from the float arm to the main body.  I've heard that this fixes a lot of problems.  I'm not sure about your ohm readings.

On the sending unit a typical resistance sweep using a DVM's 200 ohm scale should be between 9.5 ohms and 70 - 75 ohms.

Here's a good read on this:

Hmmmm, one other question. When your car is off with no key in the ignition where does the gauge needle point? Mine drops all the way to the left to where you can't see the needle.

Sorry for the delay, I thought you were asking the general population.

I have a rallye dash and the needle sits between the "E" and the first line. Maybe you can see it in the picture. Whatever cluster you have I don't think the needle should ever drop out of sight.

I have the exact same problem, gonna try to figure it out this week. I guess from reading that the sending unit can be removed without removing the tank?

My sending unit had 2 problems, the float was full of gas, had cracks in it, I drilled a hole to drain it and washed it out with water so I could solder the cracks, also the thin resistant wire inside had no contact with the connecting rivet, I put a bit of solder on it so it made contact again, used fosforic acid to be able to solder on that. It works but the float will probably crack again, and I broke one of the tabs by open and closing the thing 3 times, had to solder it shut, so I'm gonna order a new unit, just did this as a quick fix. Wonder if the ones with a plastic float is better than the brass floats?
