Bought an AAR Project.. Woot!
« on: June 14, 2013 - 09:57:38 PM »
So I saw the project AAR listed below and bit the bullet. I've always dreamed of having one and have already spoken with the  super fellow over at transamcuda.com and will be forwarding him the info on the fender tag.

Can I say again... I'm super stoked??????

The windshield channel is pretty rusty and that will require some serious work and it needs floor pans, but I've already spoken to a fellow that does body work and he quoted me a grand to the trunk and floor pans... It's amazing how the price comes down once they realizeyou can do it yourself if you really have to... In any event... A few short years ago I looked at these cars and drooled... Both the AAR and T/A cars and now today I'm taking on a new project.

I'm just gonna share the fender tag for now. The seller and I have have a good dialog and I like him a lot. I feel really fortunate, and plan on getting the car here and stabilizing it and finishing the N code SE car for my wife before delving into it... But, damn I'm stoked.

It's a real gas.

Congrats on the score!  :clapping: That is way cool! I always wanted an AAR or a T/A & had the opportunity to get an AAR (a project car) in the early 80's and was a fool to pass, but like they say...hind sight is 20-20. Keep us posted on the project. I'd like to see some pics!  :picture:

Will do. I'm waiting until the deal is all sealed and such to really post pictures but am sending him the first of two good faith deposits tomorrow (next day air).. until I can get my home equity line re-opened up. We paid it off over the last years while_not_fixing the challenger and it will take a while to get it open.

Its amazing how they have changed the rules on borrowing now.... I've never beat my bank out of a cent in over 30 years but they still have to comply with the new rules... I understand that. So it will be a few weeks.. :)

Thanks man. Always dreamed of passing one on to the kids (I don't trade and buy and sell for living) so this car, like the Barney the Purple Car will be with me for life.

That's really great to hear. What a super find.

How did you find this car and owner?
What or why did he decide to sell it?

When will we see pictures? This week?
Is it pretty close or far away for you to bring it back?
Does it have a build sheet and fender tags?

Mike, Fremont, CA.

Found it here.. Down below in the cars for sale man. It's rough. The firewall may have a bit of cancer... nothing that can't be fixed though. It has fender tags, and is a nice starting point for a restoration methinks. Needs a lot of metal work. It isn't a super high and dry desert car. It has a 440 in it so the wrong engine, but I don't care about that right now. Main thing is getting it stable and warm and cozy.

Here is another pic that is not included in the ad.

Now. Trunk seam area... around the weather stripping needs metal work. Windshield and rear glass likely need metal work, and probably the quarter panels...

Gonna take it SLOOOOOOW on this one.

I do not intend on ripping this car into tags and bags and starting from point 0.... gonna stabilize.

Looks pretty solid so far.
Get it up in the air if possible and inspect the frames with an ice picker.

Snap On sells one with a handle.
Something like that in case you need to dig at a spot you have doubts on.

I've seen far worse cars go for more, so saving this one seems right. I hope it's right. It feels right.... Gonna take patience and time though, an equal measure of both. I'll probably picklex it and cover it for a few years.....

LOL. I'm scared to dig too much... but he said the frame rails are rock solid and I trust the dude. He's a member and also was very upfront with all the issues.

an AAR or T/A are one of the few cars I would leave stock!

Good Luck

For sure. I'll leave this one as stock as it is currently and attack it piecemeal fixing things a little along. Probably will leave the 440 in it for the time being until I can afford to buy a  real TA block... that's a long ways down the road.

My main focus is getting it here and high and dry in the shop  and stopping rust... Must... KILL... RUST.

Here is a front shot. The window channel is bad but they make new channels and that can all be repaired.. In fact I don't think any part of this cars metal is not repairable from readily available patch panels if needed...

P.S.: I sent the first check today. :)

Take many many many many many pictures then put her into a soda blaster to find out the real problems, hard to start a project without knowing all the skeletons in the closet.

Primer and keep dry while working on it.
