I put the no.1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke (pushed air out the spark plug hole with my finger on it) and the rotor is pointed at the no.1 plug wire but the dots on the 2 cam gears are not lined up like instructions show that they should. Instructions show them in the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. Mine are both at the 12 o'clock positions. Is this correct for a stock chain?

yes that is corrct , the cam turns @ 1/2 speed of the crank so the dots line up twice 12/12 & 6/12 you have the cheap chain in there though & it looks loose  , you might want to get a double roller

with the new gear set, it is easier to get the dots lined up by putting the cam gear dot at six o'clock and the crank gear dot at twelve o'clock.  When You install the distributor, be sure you are on tdc before you stab the distributor.

And, yep, the old chain is definitely in need of replacement  :)

The chain was very loose. and I got it all apart tonight. Gonna put it all back together tomorrow when my cam degree wheel gets here. As far as the oil pump goes.... what is the method to priming it? Will there be any lumpiness to the idle with the 302 cam?

I would just put some grease into the oil pump so it will prime up immediatly , yes you will get some sound from the 302 cam

Im trying to degree the cam in. The dial indicator cannot be positioned over the lifter at the same angle that the lifter travels with the head on the engine. Can it be done at an angle? Instructions say it needs to be inline. Do I have to pull the head? :clueless:

No you can use it on an angle it will still read movement consistantly , or use a pushrod higher up

New chain is installed with dots at 6 and 12  positions. TDC was found with a piston stop and wheel shows 36 degrees in both directions. Cam card shows I need NO 1 cylinder intake valve open @ .50" at 2 degrees before TDC. Mine is showing 15 degrees AFTER TDC. I double checked the pointer and it hasn't moved. Whats wrong?

ok I started over again from the beginning and now it says the cam is 1 degree BTC at .50" Cam card says it needs to be 2 degrees. How do I move it 1 degree? Instructions with the Lunati chain says it is capable of moving 1,2,3, or 4 degrees advanced or retarded it does not say how to do that. Anyone know how?
