70/71 72 73/74 challenger hoods
« on: June 30, 2013 - 02:08:54 AM »
i was wondering if someone can clarify the differences between flat hoods on early 70's Challengers and a 1974 challenger flat hood. Someone had explained to me that the one i have on my car is off a 70/71 . i am hoping to make my project as close to original as i can. They further explained that a 1974 flat hood should have DODGE on it. Whereas the one on my car currently has the dodge emblem. Thanks for your input.

As with most parts the 70 is 1 year only & will not have the crumple reliefs in the frame .
The 70/71 had the tri star at the front , 72-74 did not if I remember correctly , not sure if they had Dodge lettering ?

All of them? Or just an available option?

I have a 72 challenger /6 and it has a flat hood with no holes for the dodge letters. Today I took a look under the hood and saw the oval shape that seem to have the spot for the letters. Just curios why this is. I also have a 73 flat hood that has the holes and the oval shapes underneath.  I have been told though that some 72 Challengers came with 71 parts. My Challenger has the production date 7-71.  Any ideas?

The 71 hood is different.  It has the raised center with the Dodge symbol.  Maybe the early 72's did not have the letters and they were added later.  Maybe Dodge ran out of letters.  Many things happened during that time and when a "rule" is found there are always exceptions.  If any one else has a 72 without letters from the factory post your date code.  Maybe we can find out what is supposed to be on the 72 hoods.
