Hughes Whiplash cam ? 383
« on: July 04, 2013 - 03:47:46 PM »
Here's the cam that I'm considering.......http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/products.php?browse=category&level0=QmlnIEJsb2NrIDM4My0zNjEtNDAwIChMb3cgRGVjayk=&level1=Q2Ftc2hhZnQ=&level2=RmxhdCBUYXBwZXQsIEh5ZHJhdWxpYw==&level3=TXVzY2xlIENhcg==&partid=25115

Intake Valve Lift 1.5   .518"
 Exhaust Valve Lift 1.5  .518"

Intake Valve Lift 1.6   .552"
 Exhaust Valve Lift 1.6  .552"

Intake Duration at .050"  229°
 Exhaust Duration at .050"  242°

Lobe Separation Angle  107º
Intake Opening at .050"  12.5° BTC
Exhaust Opening at .050"  53° BBC

Intake Closing at .050"  36.5° ABC
Exhaust Closing at .050"   9° ATC

Min. Suggested Cylinder PSI
Sweet Spot RPM 1800-5200

70 Cuda 4-speed HP383 (starting to have doubts if it has the HP cam. )
Here's my questions.......  Can this be used with the stock exhaust and intake manifold without being muffled to much ? What carb will work best ?  I have a 70 Cuda with a shaker hood and I'm willing to change to a better performance intake, but it will need to allow me to still use my shaker. I would also like to be able to use E10 93 octane. I don't have access to anything else on a regular basis.

if heads aren't opened up to flow more, don't think other mods like a more radical cam
will make a difference in power. Also, gotta watch valves to piston clearance.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

I'm not looking for a lot more power(time for me to calm down) as much as I'm wanting the sound at idle.

If you just want the noise of a lumpy cam, you will not need to go for something with lift over .500, try stick under that lift number as you could run in to clearance issues with valve to piston. When looking for a lumpy sounding cam, the lower the lobe seperation the lumpier it will sound, but then you start running in to vacuum issues, it is a delicate match up, i would suggest for your application to look for something that has a 110 lobe separation to do what you want all round. :2thumbs: have a look around buddy.

Looks like that cam is bad for a nasty idle and not for top end power...should do the job with the 107 lobe separation

My approach is you gotta back up the nasty idle sound with some nasty power. Because the nasty
idle sound will make a lot of cars challenge you! Its called "walking the talk" I think.

This from the guy that told me you hardly ever used the power because you did not want tickets!  :D

hardly use the power? you got the wrong guy!!
My Cuda is probably challenged at least once every time I take it out!

Its a dirty job, but someone has to do it!
Feel sorry for the Mustang Cobra GT500, that went home with his tailpipe between it legs!

You were explaining why you did not need a larger carburetor because ....it's okay, I did not believe you then!  :D

But the point is that everyone has their own wants...and in this case, the OP wants the car to sound bad but, at this point, he is not that interested in all out power.  He might change his mind later but this cam is a bit like the CC Thumpr...it will do what he wants.  :)

Well, I don't need a 950 for an extra 15 hp at 6500 rpm.  The 850 gives a better vacuum signal on the street, and thus the engine
might be less balky, ie quicker throttle response. But we've beat this horse enough I would think.

I'm just mentioning other things to consider. Its not fun to lose to a Subaru, when you're driving one of the all time coolest
muscle cars.

I really don't care how much extra power the cam might give me. At this stage all I want is enough of a cam to get a good sound.

Simply put lumpy sound is misfiring cylinders so it will hurt low end power especially if you have a stock converter , to work best with manifolds 110-114 cl works best

Being that you were running pig rich, I suspect you picked up way more than 15 hp by simply changing the jets and if you would dial in the power valve circuit, you would probably pick up some more plus improve your mileage.

I built a Subie for my son that ran mid 12s without much effort.  It was still a second slower than his Buick and two seconds slower than my Buick, but it was a blast to drive on the road.  It got 25 mpg while his Buick gets 24 on a road trip.  Have no idea on the Challenger.  I have put most of the Hotchkiss suspension on it for an emphasis on handling so it is not aimed at simply straight line.  If I live long enuf, my aim is to put a gen 3 in it and make a serious cruiser.  If I had a 500+ stroker, I would put a Dominator on it.

my power valve is a 6.5.  What do I need to change?

(since I'm under 500 cubic inches[496], I'll stick with the 850!):)

I don't have a clue what "110-114 cl" means. Any chance you could make it really easy for me and tell me what would be a good sounding cam for a 4-speed 383 and the proper carb for it ?
I have a 600 Eldebrock presently and have been planning to changing to a bigger one, but didn't want to buy one until I knew what cam I was getting.
