450 or 489 stroker 383?
« on: July 04, 2013 - 06:39:26 PM »
Im doin another motor for my challenger, I want lots of torque, and i wanna run factory exhaust manifolds to keep factory look. I will be getting stealth heads and keeping my rpm intake, and i will use my 355s and tighten up my converter to around 2800-3000 stall. what will be a good combo?

stall of 2800 to 3000 seems a little high for a torque motor, unless
you wanna continually fry your tires.

for torque, always go max cubic inches.

For arguements sack I prefer the 450 CI range with a 383 block for a street build , better rod ratio , slightly longer piston height & the oil ring is not over the wrist pin , better durability .

good point! reliability and durability matter! One of the reasons I went 40 over instead of 60 over on my 440 stroker motor.

I've looked at stroking a 383 for a while.  What stroke are you looking at to get 450 ci ?  The 400 with the std 440 crank comes out to around 451 ci, the 383 with the same crank ranges from 431 to 438 depending on std bore up to .060 overbore.  There's another option that's basically the equivalent to an offset ground 440 crank which results in approximately a 470 ci motor.  Muscle Motors sells the 470 kit which seems like a good compromise perhaps, especially since to me a 431 'stroker' seemed a little small to me especially for a big block.  I'd be interested in knowing what you decide on because until I start my 440 stroker build I'm still open to other options.  My Roadrunner has the Airgrabber setup so I have had to pick intakes that are the std height.  I have a mopar M1 dual plane intake on it now which is basically an aluminum version of the stock iron intake.  I've read that the Weiand Action Plus intake is another one that is almost exactly stock height and painted looks almost stock.  Good luck.

You're correct, I had the 3.9 stroke engine sizes confused.  At the moment I've decided to build a 440 6 pack 'tribute/clone' and will be going with a 512 ci 440 based stroker with an original 6 pack setup.  Should be fun enough for tooling around town and the occasional show.  Good luck with your build.
