I think I'm missing something Brad?  :clueless: Are you running an electric fan only or do you have a pulley fan also? I have a big stroker motor like you but run a pulley fan along with an electric fan. The pulley fan does fine as long as I'm moving. I cut in the electric fan when I am all stop and it works great. Shouldn't the HHR fans do the job when sitting? I put in the electric fan for things like you are talking about....long stops idling and not moving in 90 degree heat!  :22yikes:\

I have a 70 Cuda 383 with a 4core, 8vane waterpump and Milodon 160 highflow t-stat. Mine will run 185 around town but as soon as I start going 55-60 on an 80+ degree day it will quickly go up to 195-200. I've been suspecting for awhile now that part of my problem is my shaker hood. I took all the moveable panels out to allow better airlflow which it did help, but I still feel that big mass so close above the engine is making it hotter than normal and is also part of my vapor lock problems.

Ya I have just the HHR fan with nothing on the engine. When I'm on the hwy ( just got to Carlisle a few minutes ago) it is fine, loves 80-85 MPH  stays at 180-190 while at the border it got up to 210 then I poured water bottles down the front of the rad and it dropped the temp right down again for 5-10 minutes.

Could be getting suction hose collapse.

Nope. It has the spring in it.

if it is heating up with speed either the air flow through the rad is resticted , turn off an electric fan for example or the timing is connected to manifold & retarding the timing

Hey Brad

Can we get some pics of your fan setup?

I'm guessing its a variable fan, and if so give the details.

these days, it is hard to assume the thermostat is working properly.  I have seen several that I guess must be imported, but, they are slow to open and often do not open all the way.  I would look for a good name brand high flow unit.+

Stewart Components has a series of tech tips that explain the needs of the various components in the cooling system and how to obtain best performance.  Here is the one on Radiators.  Note what it says about dual and triple pass radiators.  I had a friend that worked in the heat exchanger division of a large truck company once and he told me the same.   http://www.stewartcomponents.com/tech_tips/Tech_Tips_5.htm

I have a hv pump and a 10% od pulley on the water pump on the car that has the triple pass radiator

too much timing advance can cause overheating
