Painted tail panels?
« on: July 13, 2013 - 12:14:41 AM »
Tail panel paint question.

I know barracudas are painted body color , gran coupes are a silver  and the cuda has a mat black kinda paint. I have a 71 cuda with amazing black  show paint on it, but they painted to tail panel black also. I will be running a billboard on the car also. Would you paint the tail panel the correct black or leave it the black it is. I will see if I have a pic so you can see.

If I do paint it whats the correct paint color, is it in a can or needs a spray gun to be applied.

If you are doing the black Billboards I would do the tail panel flat black as well. Totally Auto has a spray can the correct finish. I used it on my Barracuda with mixed results- the first time I put gas in I spilled a couple drops on the paint and it ate it right off. Since then it`s been fine so maybe it needed more cure time before exposing it to the gas. If you can find some to shot out of a gun it is almost always better paint.

The correct paint is called Organisol.  It's the same stuff that was used on the AAR hoods.  It has a texture to it.  The car won't look right if you just leave the tail panel body color.  I'd do some searching online and find the modern formula for organisol and have it sprayed from a gun.  The rattle can paint won't be durable enough since it will be exposed to gas while filling.

Your paint is too nice to put another color on it.

I would leave it the black that it is.  It looks great now!

He's talking about a Cuda. Challengers are a different animal.

The base models had body colored tail panels. The Cuda always had a blacked out tail.

Personally, I like Organisol/equivalent, and I think it'll set off the hockey stripe nicely.

It's a 71 so it will have billboards. I'm really torn on this right now. I might have to wait till the bill boards are one to decided.

Thanks josh. The paint it very nice so it's a hard choice. I will have to look at some pictures and decided I guess
I think I Will be  painting the grill black if this helps with people's ideas

decisions decisions.

Are you going with black argent on the grill like the aar's and M46's?  Or are you going with the color keyed look, gloss like that awesome paint?

I think you need to go into you picture inventory and either send or show me the difference  :useless: haha. I was thinking about matching body color but argent might be good too

Do you have the `Cuda chrome :dunno: as you will need it :grinyes:

Do it in the correct Organasil Black, it will be the best move you ever do, the Organasil has a tendancy to flip color in different light as it is a rough textured paint and the different high and low surfaces react differently with all kind of light, it will go best with your billboards too, as it is a mix between semi gloss and flat Black, you will love it :2thumbs: Do not leave it shiny.

I prefer the gloss black look on the tail panel.
You could put the billboards on then use some of that plasti-dip removeable paint stuff on the tail panel and get a rough idea of what it would look like. :2cents:

I was thinking about that plastic dip too. Here is a few pictures of the car when I picked it up. http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=90770.0
