67 Rambler American Wagon 440
« on: July 15, 2013 - 04:17:56 PM »
So today I came across a 67 Rambler American Wagon 440, just to clarify, 440 is the trim line not the engine.  This thing was showroom clean, dark green with matching interior, car was just flat out cherry.  I was in a hurry so I just asked the guy how much he wanted for it and he said 8k.  I don't know much about these cars (powertrain, value etc) except that they look a lot like a 67 Satellite wagon! Lol just looking for some general info, were they a product share with Chrysler? Or just coincidence?  What kind of powertrain would this thing have and what's it worth?  I'm not saying it's ECS or ANL restored accurate, but every bit of this car looked like it just came off the assembly line.  I know where the guy works so maybe I can get a pick or two over the next few days, but based on what I got, what do u guys think?  THANKS!

Here is a Wikipedia link on the Rambler. It gives quite a bit of info on AMC and their product line including engine options. Hope this is of some help!!  :2thumbs:

Right?  I'm thinking headers and exhaust, and some wide "cop" style wheels

That is a nice looking car, but I agree that $8k sounds high.

IMHO , you could make a nice little hauler out of it. Some wheels/tires would change it up nicely. They have lots of performance parts for AMC that werent available years ago. But because of what it is it'll never be a BIG $$$ car. See his reaction @ 5K.... go from there

even at 8 k you can't restore it for anywhere near that. I don''t think it's a bad deal and these wagons are getting more and more popular.

I dig it, alot.

My name is Stu and I'm a life-long AMC addict.  I've had several, including my '68 AMX which I've had for over 30 years.  That doesn't make me an expert on value, but I do have a feel for it.

As clean as that car looks, assuming it's in overall good mechanical condition, $6500 would be a good price.  The seller might get 8K out of the right person, but he'll likely wait a long time before they show up.  As much as people seem to love my Rambler, they still don't end up buying one.  In the AMC world, it seems that fewer and fewer people own more and more of the cars, so the likely buyer will be another AMC guy, who probably won't pay top dollar.

AMC's had a solid reputation for reliability and long life - their downfall was that they were pretty boring.  The Rogue and subsequently the Javelin, AMX, Hurst SC/Rambler and Rebel Machine changed that perception.  Winning races and breaking records didn't hurt, either.  But they just couldn't keep up with the big 3, and their hot new products were left behind over the next 10 years.  These days, AMC's are finally getting some attention and respect, and their values are increasing.  Since Chrysler bought AMC in '87, they're part of the family and are welcomed by most Mopar enthusiasts.

The 343 V8 is a good motor, and is interchangeable with ALL other "2nd gen" AMC motors (290, 343, 390 and the later 304, 360 and 401).  Externally, they are visually indistinguishable, except for a few specific details.   The auto tranny would likely be a Borg Warner unit, similar to FMX.  If it happens to be a 3- or 4- speed, even better.  The '67 American would share virtually no parts with Chrysler - most everything is AMC-specific.  I've never had much issue with parts being unobtainable.  Most engine parts are easily available due to commonality with Jeep V8's and mechanicals like brakes are regular parts house items.  The AMC aftermarket is growing pretty fast these days, with lots of new repop and specialty stuff introduced regularly.  For used parts and tech advice, the AMC community is one of the most helpful you'll find.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now, with one final thought.  If you think it's cool, you should go for it!
-Stu
