Sooooo...ticked off!! Just need to vent!!!
« on: July 17, 2013 - 01:09:28 PM »
I know there are a few guys out there that are in a far worse predicament than me (ok so a lot more than a few)  but I need to vent and this is the only place my wife won't see it!!!

3 weeks ago my wife stepped off a curb and twisted and fractured her ankle.  At least the doc says he thinks there may be hairline fracture.

The ortho doc puts her in an aircast / walking boot.  So she is mobile but can't drive.  Took her about 3 days to go stir crazy.  Meanwhile my job is to get the kids all the places they need to go.  Good thing I have a desk job with no real office hours.

So today at the follow up appointment, they take new xrays and the doc comes in, same doc we saw before, and he says, so how long ago did this happen and what did you do....was it broke or twisted?  MY wife and I glanced at each other like...huh???  She tells him 3 weeks ago. He says that it looks like she strained some ligaments...maybe.  Have you started Physio?...never said anything about that, so no. Ok start weaning yourself off the boot...and start physio...at my practice.  Have a great day...oh the xrays look good!  See you in 4 weeks.

My wife and I look at each other, wean off the boot, well for how long, each day...he says as much as your comfortable but don't go too much...as he is walking out the door.

I just left shaking my head...can she put weight on it or not???  More questiosn than answeres.

My poor wife is in tears in the car, because she just wants to be able to drive, or at least know how long it may take to be independent again.

I left feeling like cattle, push them in push them out.  Felt like the doc could not even be botherd to look at his notes from the last visit.

Just annoyed I guess.

Think I will get her to follow up with our family doc and see if she can get better care.

Thanks...needed to get that off my chest.

Jason

Is this typical of Canadian healthcare? I would definitely find another doctor if at all possible. Seems
that some doctors think there is no one else that can do their job.  :swear:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Living here in Cnada I love our health care it has it's holes like everything but 2 years ago when I broke my leg and mangled up some innards while skiing I was likely put through the same type of air cast/ physio that your wife is going through. Since I know zero about the human body, I found they took thier time to educate me about what exactly went wrong and what will need to happen for it to heal. The doctor even made an example with how my leg heals to the alignment of a car.

There is always a bad apple I think you found that apple.

Hope your wife is better soon. Why can't she drive? I drove with a cast on my foot. I just used my good foot for gas/brake, but it won't work too well if you have a 3rd pedal (clutch). Maybe she doesn't want to try the other foot? It does take a little getting used to!  :2thumbs:

That would piss me off too. If a doctor can't remember a patient after only three weeks...they have too many patients.

Sorry to hear about your wife's experience.

If the ankle is still hurting like a mofo after 3 weeks, then there is a good chance that there is indeed a hairline fracture.  IMHO I would go back and insist on getting the care that's required (have them look at the X-rays again, take new pics etc.).  I went through this when I broke my wrist a few years back where the attending physician missed the fracture and there was no improvement in my condition over a couple of weeks.

For better or worse I've broken enough bones to have an idea of what they feel like and the time for recovery.

If it's a hairline fracture and the ankle's been kept immobilized for the 3 weeks, and it's not causing her any pain, then odds are it's starting to heal normally.  Again, go back and insist on the check.

As for physio etc., the hospitals often do a poor job of referrals or education so unfortunately, as a health care consumer you may have to push a bit with the questioning/directions/recommendations.

Hopefully whatever it is is not too serious and it resolves itself relatively quickly

I read on Moparts. where a guy had been without a job for 6 years. Everywhere he applied, he was either over qaulified or to old. THAT would be something to bemoan about.

I'm an idiot. My post got somehow got lost. Remember when you die, it will not matter how big your house, how big your car, how much money you made, but if you made a difference in someones life.
