Carlisle hotel 2014
« on: July 18, 2013 - 01:15:13 AM »
So I have been thinking about the hotel and how much fun it was in the parking lot after the show and I think getting a hotel farther out from Carlisle is not a bad idea.  Not only will it be easier for members to get rooms, it would be cheaper.   I don't mind driving 1/2 hour to the show or even 45 minutes as the caravan of  E-Bodies is a great site!  When we stayed out at the other hotel, we had the back parking lot where we lined up the cars.  Then in the morning we would all meet in the parking lot and follow each other to the show.  It was fun on the highway with all the ebodies lined up!

If we get a hotel where we don't need a block of rooms as they will be available even the day before the show, that would help our member turn out at the same hotel.   I would like to hang with some of the members that stay at cheaper hotels or decide to come to late and can't get a room . . . . .

ViperDork  . . . you will know best . . . How far away will we have to stay to achieve this?  What if we stayed up by Dodge City?  Then the restraurant would be close?  Or is that a bad area?

We stay near Harrisburg a lot when we visit my family.  There are a lot of attractions near there, and they always jack the room prices in the summer.  Hershey park is a big part of that.

I personally wouldn't stay too close to Dodge City.  It's a lot better than it used to be.  But I wouldn't trust parking my car most places in Harrisburg over night.

There are a cluster of hotels in Linglestown PA which is a little more than a half hour drive to Carlisle, and about 15 minutes to Dodge City.

Most of the hotels in Harribsurgh don't have large enough parking lots.

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza (Don't waste your time) and the Hilton.

This.

Harrisburg isn't exactly the greatest place to be overnight.

I still vote that we check out the "old" hotel again.  I also suggest we get a block of rooms, but "save" them until closer to the show for those who may not know their availability to attend until much later.  The rest of us can just book regular rooms, and save the "block" for the last-minute folks.

And yes if we head too far East, we'll get Hershey rates...  I suggest either North (and there's really nothing up North) or South, towards York (just gotta watch the location - York has some good areas and some bad areas...)

Remember that when we got a block of rooms at the old hotel, they bumped up the rate for our block which I think is BULLSH!T.  I wonder if they were sold out for the weekend of Carlisle?  Last time I stayed there, it was $69.95 a night and I didn't say we had a block of rooms.  Members that got a room through the block were charged $119.95 a night . . . . .

Oh I remember - but this year we didn't do a block and we got what, five people at the hotel?  Trust me I've wrestled with this for the past 2 years.  There's just no easy answer.

But I say we reserve a block at the old hotel, and those of us who can plan ahead of time go ahead and book our rooms now - not in the block though.  Then we can save our block for those who realize last minute that they can go, and then they're still able to stay with us.

The only problem I see is that the private back lot we used to have is now connected to a new hotel...  Still probably not used very often though...

I'm in on whatever you guys decide. In my opinion there is no reason to stay too close to Carlisle. Aside from the show, there's really nothing to do there. A decent hotel with a nice bar and good sized parking lot area would be best. Some other friends stay at that hotel Brad stayed at and like it alot.

The last time I was booking a block of rooms. A couple of weeks out, any room that wasn't booked was fair game for anyone else. So if you booked early, great. If you waited until the last minute, good luck with that.

Looking at the air shot again, I don't think that other hotel is "NEW" . . . isnt that the one they were showing movies on the back wall one year?  I think so . . . . that wasn't a nice hotel unless it has been totally remodeled . . . .  :grinno:

So did the Whore house turn into a Steak house? Is that Tube Steak?

For my yearly shows I pay more to be close to the events. For Carlisle, I try to book close to your hotel so I don't pay for the "extras" when I'm traveling by myself.  I think the old hotel had a Motel 6 or something right across the highway. That is where I stayed in 07 if I'm thinking of the same place.

You have to remember that the show may be more important to most of the members here.

no Dave I think the older hotel you're thinking about was attached to that wh...steak... house.  That's the sorta-curved gray roof in the middle of the picture.  The new hotel was I think just getting started in construction the last time we stayed there, 'cause remember that lot was actually closed off and filled with construction equipment.

I'll make some calls next week and get something booked.  Yes MEK you are correct - the blocks are only good until about 2 weeks before the weekend in question.  I think the most efficient and organized hotel I've worked with in the past was that Radisson in Camp Hill (the one with the non-working AC for MEK).  Other than that, I actually liked that hotel.  Remember they gave us free ice in our coolers, too.

I wished they had given me free ice for my bed in that 100* heat.

I liked this year's Hotel too. It seemed to be close to the show, and I thought the cost was similar to what we paid at the Radisson, if I remember right.

It was, and that's just it - they've all been within $10 or so of each other when we called around.  The only exceptions being the Hamptons/Hyatt's/etc.  I was surprised the Radisson wasn't more than it was, in fact.

I still dont think so . . . I remember that we had to walk to the back end of the Viperboy land to see the wall they were playing their movies on and from that pictures the wall would be facing us??

That must have been before my time - I never remember that.  I also don't remember that lot connecting to anything else in that back corner except for the access road that ran out to the main road (where ShelbyDogg did his burn out a few years ago.)  All I can say is, the roof sure looks brand new.  :)

Unfortunately I won't be getting back to Harrisburg any time soon, but I'll see what I can dig up.  I'm sure a few phone calls can clear things up.
