71 Barracuda - new project -

Hey CC - its been a few years since my last project. Time to jump on another one.

Not sure what way to go with this car?

The Story

Its a 'G' code -
She was cut up and used at the track back in the day changing hands
a couple times here in Michigan.
 I bought her over 10 yrs ago for a parts car storing it until now.

I removed the firewall with front floor half and rad support.
Those were cut up. I cleaned up the frame, inner fenders, rear floor,
trans cross member metal. which had original paint with another top coat
and some rust pitting in the rear floor.


Im not sure if I will keep the back half or go stock?

 I almost always like to see them in stock form , but it might be cost prohibitive in this case? :dunno:

I plan to sell this when I'm finished.

Not sure if its better for the sale with the back halfed?
compared to the $3k parts + labor = investment to bring her back to stock?

If she's already back-halfed I would pro-street her.  Find a budget friendly big block and a 727, and put some nice meats in there, just keep the body stock-ish looking.  Doesn't have to hook up like a drag car, just sounds good and not be a slug.  But hey, just my $.02, if it was my car and I was keeping it them I see a pro-touring style build, stock looking body, shaker, billboard, go-wing, with HOTCHKIS TVS and some nice 18s with low pro tires and a manual trans, either a built up 340 based stroker or a new hemi swap :)

I am kinda on a smaller budget -

So far my past cars all have been factory stock -

If I go pro street - a couple things I think about...

1) won't that type be less appealing to the majority of buyers?
    IE: object is to obtain the most buyers with the highest price.

2) race type cars ( back halfed ) tend to only bring in .10 cents on the dollar -
    lower top value when finished - $25k

3) how to cover the rear tub - seat area? this may = extra high dollars from custom upholstery shop :dunno:

4) narrowed rear end is a given.

5) wider wheels + tires -

6) one plus is I could go with after market bucket power seats!

project cars sure are challenging -
this one is not for the faint of heart for sure -
I must be insane and looking for punishment I guess - :bricks1:

Well I got the front end removed today.
This was the easiest front end part removal I have ever done!

Compared to the floor removal - which took a couple days!
man they welded the heck out of those thick metal fab panels -


Only had two stubborn bolts under the K frame that I had to use a torch to heat them up.
even the torsion bars were so-ooo easy to pull ( thanks to allot of grease )

All the nuts broke loose fairly easy, with the lower control arms. Uppers were just as easy.

These original parts are almost perfect like new condition - must be why I had it smooth

I messed up the drag shocks up front when sand blasting - oh well...

Good think you waited 10 years. At least all the parts are available now! I hope you like welding, grinding and body work because with all that work that needs to be done it will be very hard to make money on it if you plan on just selling it.

your right about the parts are so everywhere now!

with the body work, its just another challenge type job for me.


I shall be a Weld - meant - guy counting each weld singing to the theme song ( 99 bottles of beer on the wall) 
 in my case .... 99 sticks of welds on my car, 99 sticks of weld,
when I run outta sticks, I go to the store, and buy a bigger box of weld sticks some more!!! :bigsmile:

I am thinking Pro Touring with no backseat?  The Seca Laguna Boss 302 was backseat-delete to save weight, and that didn't seem to reduce desirability of the package.  Pro Street is a tougher sell because they can be so impractical.  If you could find an inexpensive 5.7 Hemi from a junkyard that would be worth considering.

 5.7's are a nice motor and Fast in the E body - I think they have come a long way since I did my
 install in my cuda back in 2004 - I still hear that set up still has issue's to work out yet - not
 really sure about that?

My progress over the weekend is after I removed the front end parts,
I sanded then cleaned up the metal, coated as much of the frame inside and out, floors, roof,
 inner fenders ect with metal spray
'Ospho' - to protect and convert any rust pits. then got allot of the frame inside and out with primer,
sealer, paint with clear mix.

The reason to do that now is, once the floor is in - I won't be able to hit those area's -
I will grind the weld area's, then spray weld coating before spot weld. Then repeat all over again.

The biggest thing with this car will be the panel alignment -
most critical - before I complete the spot weld:
(the floor, firewall, cross member all need weld)
 to check level, square, gaps, up/down, in/out with the fenders,
hood, header panel, lower valance, doors, firewall, inner fenders, frames ---
 just to tack them in with screws. Temp in the hinges, until I get it right to the chasis book specs -
