Might of hurt the stroker ;(
« on: July 19, 2013 - 09:25:46 PM »
I saw a little something on a video my daughter shot last year of a 1/4 mile pass - there was a little puff out the pipes as I brought the rpm's up and it shifted gears. I discounted this as running rich on this pass as I had just jetted way up - too way up. Anyways a coworker of mine watched me pull away at lunch today and he mentioned as I stabbed the throttle - I love making the car jump - he noticed what he described as oil puffs and he feels it is a valve guide problem. Seemingly I haven't really noticed it as when I am hammering it I am always looking straight ahead. Now of course that it's been mentioned I have been keeping an eye out for it and YES it smokes when I hammer it and let off - seemingly when I rev it too higher rpm. It still runs strong as ever (I think).

Does this sound like valve guide issues - what may be causing this. It is a 500CI stroker with Eddy performer heads, M1 intake, 1000 CFM carb blah blah blah. Oh and yes this engine has seen well over 200 1/4 mile passes. Suggestions??? Seems like every year bout a month before my favorite race weekend this thing gives me a project to take care of.

 Thanks in advance.

Compression and leak down test. That will tell you where the cylinders stand

Personbally the season is so short I would just run it for the rest of the year . it will start getting cold at night again in 3 more weeks or so , a bit of oil is not going to kill it .

I think you are right CP - I will check the compression, change oil looking for debris, whatever I can check without disabling the car. Hopefully it can get through 1 more weekend race in Drayton(good time). Then coast it through to winter and tear into it. I am considering a head and cam swap anyways - this might just be enough of a reason. Besides - what could go wrong  :clueless: :dunno: :working:

 :iagree:

also take a good look at the plugs...

if you didn't see any metal in the oil and cut the filter open , you should be ok until you get it apart..

It could be just a bad intake seal too

That gets me thinking CP as when the video was shot of the first sign of puffing it was the 1st race after the M1 and 1000CFM Holley were installed. I also had to remove the intake and reseal right away as I had a leak across the back. I never seem to get away that easily though.

I got lazy today and did nothing but think about looking at the car. Tomorrow I will do a compression test and oil change - I don't have the equip to do a leakdown test. If the compression test and oil sample look good then I will pull the intake and reseal as this is not a difficult task as I have done it a couple times

As always folks - I really appreciate the help, advice and all around great people here.  :ylsuper:

Heres some pics of the plugs with the compression #'s beside each one. Overall the cylinders are consistent with a high and low one - the plugs however are all over the place. Your thoughts? The plugs are not numbered by cylinder just by location as removed from ds front to back and ps front to back.

Compression looks fine ,  I wonder if a dam on the floor of the 5&6 intake runner would help dist  ? lean at the front & rich in #5 & 6 , you have them numbers as 3 &7

That might be something to play with - would I have to have a weld run in there or......??? I also wonder if indexing the plugs may help - I have never done that but it seems easy enough. I don't think I wanna start playing with different gaps in different holes or mixing plugs.

I also dropped the oil this afternoon and the oil has 0 shrapnel and clean(only gets maybe 1000 km a year) - run through a magnet as well as fine strainer. I am takeing the filter to work tomorrow as I believe we have a filter cutter there for further inspection.

I will pick up intake gaskets and valley pan tomorrow as well as new plugs and see what I find under the intake.

epoxy would hold as long as the metal is clean , Indexing may help but it really just looks rich in 5&6 cylinders

Perhaps a couple of heat ranges hotter plugs in those rich cylinders?

Okay I swapped the valley pan and intake gaskets tonight - I would like to think I saw some oil where it shouldn't be but that would be hoping - It was near 10pm so I couldn't warm the car up and see if I solved anything - neighbours and all.

Anyways speaking of plugs. When I received my engine it had NGK BCPR6ES (stock # 2330) in it gapped to .035. I have been running this combo ever since. I check with Edelbrock and they suggest Champion RC12YC of which NGK has a bulletin stating do not use these plugs or the NGK equivelant.

NGK suggests R5672A-8 or -9 or -10 . Raceing stock #'s are 7173, 7405, 7942 respectively. I am thinking I might give the -8's a try as they look a little warmer - any thoughts as I get lost in all the plug specs.   :clueless: Any concerns  :feedback:
