carpet install question
« on: July 20, 2013 - 02:02:14 PM »
Does the carpet at the door sill plate just roll up to the top of the lip, or does it roll over the top?

I'm installing a new carpet and don't have an old one to go by.
Thanks

You can roll it over the top if you want.  I cut mine off flush with the lip and glued it down.  As long as the sill plates still fit, it doesn't really matter.  Cut the carpet long and check the fitment.  If the sill plates won't go on, then trim the carpet some more.

I couldn't get the sill plate to fit and was worried that it would pull out over time, but glueing it is a great idea.  :2thumbs:
Thanks

Now that I think about it, that's the problem I had with mine.  The carpet that was in the car was rolled up over the lip.  When I did that with the new carpet, the trim wouldn't snap down.  I had to cut it off flush.  If you don't glue it, it will pull right out.

I had some left over vinyl top glue that I used.  I'm not sure what I would have used if I didn't have that in the garage.  Spray adhesive would be too messy.  I don't know if a rubber cement product would work or not.  Maybe vinyl top glue is available at parts stores that sell auto body supplies?

Funny I just did this yesterday and my hands are all cut up from the xacto knife cuts.

But anyway, I left it long to just go over the sill plate and then locked it down with the sill plate. This way you will never have the carpet get pulled down and hanging loose in the car. I should mention you need to cut it just before the screw holes for the sill plate.

Original sill plates or reproduction?  My reproduction sill plates wouldn't snap down with the carpet over the lip.

I'm guessing they are repop that came with the Cuda since they are still shiny.

But plenty of room to lock the carpet down and it's looks good.

This is a very good all purpose glue I use alot.   You can get it in smaller sizes.    http://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-Weldwood-32-fl-oz-Nonflammable-Contact-Cement-25332/100174435

Thanks for the help. The guy that put my sills on cut the sill to fit. I had to get new ones and they won't fit over the carpet.

With original sill plates the carpet goes over the flange with enough material to basically just cover the flange...  Original sill plates were available for a long time.. Into the 90's at least...
