Car Transportation Advice
« on: July 22, 2013 - 12:42:24 PM »
Biting my nails, the inspection of a Cuda I hope to buy is in 2 hours...  I cant be there, I'm in CA and the car is in FL.

I've gotten a lot of sound advice here so thought I'd come back for more. If all goes well I'll be looking for a transport company to bring the Cuda from FL to CA in an enclosed trailer. Does anyone here have any recommendations for someone they've used? So far I got one quote from a company referred to me, Cosmos Auto Transport. I'd like to get some more quotes especially from companies anyone here has used and were happy with.  I'll be spending the next few days arranging transport. Dont want to trust the car to just anybody. Thanks in advance for any info.

Avoid the lowest bid, it's usually from companies that bid them and then try to find drivers to take the route, if the bid is too low, no one will take it and u will just keep waiting, and customer service will give u a "truck broke down" runaround, I've had this happen twice, out of 3 cars I've shipped.  Only use a BBB accredited company.  Unless u have a glowing recommendation from someone you know personally

You might want to try sending C O D Y a PM I think he's had several cars shipped, and he can definitely tell you of at least one person to avoid.

It's a crap shoot. In 2005 I used Fedex custom critical to delivery me a new car from 500 miles away. The event was flawless, but I learned that Fedex farmed out their work to any Billy Bob that was coming my way. So two guys with half their teeth missing brought me my car, but I was happy.

I have never transported a car and I would use it as an excuse to fly down and drive it back but at every high end acution or car show I always see these guys kicking around:

probably expensive but they seem to be the go to guys for expensive cars?  :dunno:

Maybe a bit more expensive but it's trailered, climate controlled and on time.

From what I know, FedEx used to subcontract this business to Passport Transport, whom I used to ship my 'Cuda.

The job was straightforward and flawless. The guy even parked it in the garage for me. I was a bit afraid to do it myself the first time since I was unfamiliar with the car.

The other company I heard good things about was Horseless Carriage. I had a friend ship a Ferrari with them. To be honest, I tried them first, but they were slammed with business and couldn't help me right away.

How did the inspection go?  Send us pics of what you got?  If you didn't get it, send us pics anyway.

It depends. If your friend had a good luck with one car shipping company, it doesn't always mean that you'll be treated as well.

It all depends what are you searching for. If you are looking for cheap cheap pricing, you'll find a lot of companies (even with good reviews) who will promise you to deliver that, but never will. Reason for that is that most of companies you will be communicating are brokerages and they subcontract your order to a carrier who actually sets the price. Price depends more not only on the distance, but on their route too.

Your best option is to find a company who will show you real pricing and screenshots from their internal system with actual carriers rates.

Never heard of Cosmos, but I'd recommend a1 auto for shipping classics. I've used them twice for cross country trips (enclosed, of course) and had no complaints. My understanding is that prices can vary a little bit between companies, but they seemed to be firmly in the middle of the pack with the ones I got so I was fine with it. Plus I've heard some bad things can happen if you go with the cheapest (i.e. shadiest) option. It's not worth the risk in my opinion.
